Redishing rear wheel - how far can it go?

As-is, it lined up perfectly with the middle cog on the freewheel.
My concern -- can I redish that wheel far enough to line up a track cog with the outter chainring? Is this a common task? Or will I spend an hour or so cranking away at the spokes, just to find myself unthreading them completely before it dishes out far enough? I have about $4 in my pocket right now, so any solutions or ideas involving a purchase are probably out of the question. I figured this was more appropriately targeted to the fixed gear/single speed folks since it's more probable you guys have dealt with something like this, so I apologize if it belongs in the mechanics section. Moving the 53T chainring to the inside position will help, as will a shorter spindle in your BB. You can usually scronge a used spindle at yoour local LBS for a buck or two. Good Luck! |
This may be a dumb question but can't you just move the 53 chainring to the middle?
Edit: Nevermind, you won't clear the chain stay. Been a loooong day at work. |
The wheel ought to be fine. That's exactly what I did with mine.
And just so you know, before I did that, I ran just 5 speeds with the big ring in front too. You don't need that little ring in flat areas. |

Good Luck! If you are really broke, you can try flipping the exisiting spindle (assuming a cup/cone BB), as the non-drive side is often shorter than the drive-side. |
