Sunday to Nyack?

sunday is supposed to be pretty nice, so i was thinking about putting a sissy gear on the fixie and seeing if i could ride to Nyack. if anyone is interested, we could meet either in central park (by the angel) or in prospect park. i plan to go at a medium pace since this is more about getting there than getting there fast (though i wouldn't mind getting a little exercise out of it).

anyone down?

iamjberube 02-10-05 08:19 AM

i would be, but i have to go kill lobsters in hampton bays for the weekend.

chaloots 02-10-05 09:42 AM

this sunday is no good for me but if you plan to do it again in the near future i'm in .post it up

neuron 02-10-05 10:07 AM

i'd possibly be into it. i might also have to put on a sissy gear (i run 52/15) if we're gonna go there, else i'd be zoomin down the hills and crawling up them. :)

yeah, that's way too heavy. i'm going to downgrade (probably) from 48/17 for the ride.

weather depending, i'm up for a ride like this every weekend.

BlindRobert 02-10-05 05:11 PM

I might be into that and my sissy gear is already on the bike! Depends on what comes up at work this week - may have to go into the office. drag. I would rather meet in PP. Where? I'm on the orange Nishiki.

akky 02-10-05 06:13 PM

Depending on the time and pace, I'll be up for it. Haven't done anything that long on the fixie yet. I could meet you guys by the GW Bridge.

i guess that is the hook --doing a long ride like this is the challenge. i used to do this in well under 3 hours on the roadie. one time we took Reed (of messenger fame) on his cheap-assed fixie and he kicked our tocheses. really, he kicked butt! f**ker was 47 at the time and blew us away. that's my inspiration.

meet wherever. if we get a crew together we can contact by cell phones. i'll be starting from central SI, so i'll be on ten+ miles b4 i see anyone else. no matter where we meet.

i wanna do it just to see the look on the faces of the roadies at the cafe when i get there.

ultra-g 02-10-05 07:59 PM

Hey, if the weather's nice I'm down!

Where's Nyack?

Anyway, if you'd like company I need the work-out, what's medium pace to you? I'm running 48x17, maybe 48x19 if the cog I ordered from ebay gets here tomorrow like it's supposed to.

I'd have to meet in Central Park though, but we can meet at the Boathouse or something.

We have a Nyack here in California too but it is at about 6000 feet and we're on the valley floor. Could be a fun climb on a singlespeed though...

Msngr 02-10-05 08:21 PM

hey now! take it easy ca guys! so silicone here!

Nyack is just above the Tappan Zee on the west side. roadies love the ride because it follows the river and there is no cross traffic. there are rolling hills that are a little hairy for us NYers, and it is tough!

im doing it no matter what..

we should talk friday night, or sat morn?

ultra-g 02-10-05 08:35 PM

Where should the Non-Prospect Park folk meet up with youz guyses?

we can meet either in central p or at the GwB (on either side). if you are in queens, i'd recommend CP at the angel (72nd street, halfway through), or wherever. i think that the most important thing is to ride. we can all be sure to meet --that part is easy. and as far as pace goes -- who cares? let's have fun, dernit!

i will ride as slowly as i need to.

Msngr 02-10-05 08:46 PM

oh, and it will be nice to meet you. g-dog.

Same here, what kind of bike do you ride?

I've been on my trainer every night this week, I should be good to go Sunday.

Msngr 02-10-05 09:16 PM

don't scare me!

i ride a fuji basic fixed with the best upgrades ever. ever.

you got that kid? ever.

BTW-- best upgrade = me haha

as soon as i said that, i broke a dish and my girl is pissed!

Msngr 02-12-05 08:44 AM

OK. tomorrow will be a little chilly, but otherwise nice. so here's the deal:

i think Prospect Park is out as a meeting place. most of us can meet at Central Park at the angel (halfway through the 72nd street half-assed transverse). Akky, PM me your cell number and we'll meet you at the GWB.

i'll bring my messenger bag to carry water and tools --bring your own water and give it to me when we meet. also, me hand pump only goes to about 60 psi. i'm going to continue to rock 48/17, as i've decided that this is light enough for me. neuron, you gotta lighten up that gearing. there is no way you can power up the hills on that.

now, what time should we meet? akky should plan to meet us about a half an hour lafter whatever time we decide.

i'm going to do this no matter what, so i won't be offended if no one else shows, but i think it'll be fun with a fixie crew. plus, let me know either way on this forum so i won't be waiting in the cold.

ultra-g 02-12-05 06:11 PM

What time are you meeting???

I'm also running 48x17, I hope you don't kill me though, I'll feel stupid if I can't keep up.

I'm worried about ME keeping up with YOU! . . . i'm sure we can wait up for each other.

no time is yet set. i've been waiting for someone to suggest a time. BTW --it may be a tad windy tomorrow, and a little colder than today. so a later start (noonish?) may not be a bad idea.

akky 02-12-05 11:38 PM

Noonish sounds good, just post here what time you guys are going to be by the bridge, and I'll meet you there. I'll ck in the morning.

neuron 02-13-05 03:43 AM

spent some time stripping my bianchi mountainbike and putting it in its highest gear -- it is now a singlespeed running at something ridiculous like 38-12 or something. i got the crazy idea in my head after running central park 52-15. i'm kind of feeling that hill in my legs right about now... a trip with all that orange 'gate' stuff.

i'm gonna try to get up early tomorrow to hose all the salt and ***** off her, and try to make it out to a bike parts store for some parts like possibly a new chain. definitely new brake cables.

i think for this thing tomorrow i'm gonna run singlespeed mtb. if it's cool with you guys to have someone running ghetto freewheel singlespeed. i suppose i could drop the peugeot to 42/15, but i'm fixated on this semi-new machine. if i ride tomorrow then i won't spend too much time in the bike store dropping cash on her.

i'll bring my tools too -- i've got an alien multi, a co2 pump and a handpump that goes up pretty high.

hopefully i'm not too wacked in the morning. i should be sleeping. maybe i'll have a clearer head. :)

Msngr 02-13-05 08:23 AM

OK. the plan, then, is to meet at the halfway point of the 72nd street trans in CP (msngr, ultra-g, neuron, possibly blindrobert, and whoever else wants to show) at NOON. we can meet up with akky on the bridge at 12:30, i'll PM akky my cell number. i'll be the guy in an orange vest (very trendy) on a fixie (also trendy, or so i hear). we'll ride to nyack, get lunch and head back. we ride the pace of the slowest among us, k?

if neuron shows i'll be pretty impressed. check out the time on that last post.

Msngr 02-13-05 05:07 PM

well, we did it. it was just akky and myself, but we had fun anyway. real feeling of accomplishment, too. we kept a pretty good pace for most of it. actually all of it, since akky and me seem to be about the same fitness level and age. i was a little slow going down the hills at tallman mountain, and at the very end i got a little winded. but i feel great now.

akky and i are going to do this again in a few weeks. so if anyone else wants to come, you would be welcome.

what happened to ultra-g? i thought you were a lock-in.

it was great to meet you, akky.

neuron 02-13-05 09:15 PM

didn't see you guys -- i was ~15minutes late. did you guys hang out a bit beforehand, or did you take off at noon sharp? definitely want to do it next time out.

ultra-g 02-13-05 11:02 PM

Sorry I missed it, I didn't wake up until 1pm.

I did make it into the park and got to ride the "Gates" Obstacle course (meaning dodging all the freaking spectators).
