Question on straps and pedals.

Sorry for the questioning, but this has been really bothering me and I could not have found a clear answer on the interwebs. Hopefully you guys can bare with a noobie here.

Are straps(standard velcro straps, like Hold Fast straps), compatible with track pedals? By track pedal, I mean something like this: http://www.cyclingcloseouts.com/imag...5010292-01.jpg . I have almost the same exact pedal as this, just different branding. Because it seems like a stretch to blow $30 on good straps, then another $30 on new pedals as well.

Kinda. It's hit and miss.

hockeyteeth 03-15-13 10:11 PM

I wouldn't consider the pedal you linked a track pedal (more of a road quill pedal), but it is compatible with toe clips and straps. For comparison, this is more of a track pedal (the cage doesn't stick out as far, so it would be less likely to hit the bank of a velodrome): http://www.retro-gression.com/produc...n-track-pedals

How so?

And @hockeyteeth, Are there significant downsides to a extended cage? Basically, i'm more worried about a good with with the straps :( Tight on money atm, not looking to hit and miss a product that won't work for me.

In my experience velcro straps work much better with a bigger platform (think BMX style). I put some Reload straps on a track pedal but the small platform made it not-so-comfy and the slots are so small that they were a pain to install and they're probably never coming out.

It is hard to see in the pedal you linked, but there is no slot for the "front" of the two underside straps. There is only one slot.

Actually, those EighthInch pedals do have two sets of slots (you can see it a little bit on the black and white pedals but I've seen them in person). You would never be able to get Holdfasts through them though because the slots are too small.

I've gotta say clipless is the way to go. Once you get use to it after a week, you never go back.

Au contraire, I used clipless for about three weeks and went back to clips and doubles.

Nagrom_ 03-16-13 10:02 AM

Sounds like you never got used to it.

These will work for your pedals http://www.ebay.com/itm/POWERGRIPS-P...item589cac75f1

Based solely on the amount of times I've had to quickly bail because people/cars/taxis in NYC are crazy, I'm never going clipless.

I ride clipless on my geared Bianchi and got used to it just fine riding fixed. I just prefer what I prefer.

No, you're supposed to like what everyone else does.

Get it together man.

Quick, one person tell OP that the straps will work in his pedals so he'll try to do it.

Sorry, I didn't realize you wanted to use velcro straps. I thought you meant a traditional toe strap and toe clip. Like Scrod said, BMX pedals typically work best with those velcro straps. Why do you want velcro straps? They're ugly and goofy.

Dixie Gentleman 03-16-13 07:21 PM

toe clips and double straps for life.

They get the job done...I don't have to wear goofy bike shoes...or too trendy Chrome shoes..

seau grateau 03-16-13 09:13 PM

They always seemed to grip the foot tighter than clips and straps for me. That can be good or bad. I know a guy who broke his leg because he went down and couldn't get his foot out.

I prefer clips and straps, but I'm not an "everyone" ... hmm, maybe that's a good reason NOT to do what I do.

If your bike has a low bottom bracket, the quill decreases cornering clearance and makes pedal strike more likely. And if you have wide feet, the quill may not accommodate your shoe.

I don't know. I used clipless for a while on my fixed gear but went back to toeclips and slotted cleats after a couple months. I do still have clipless on my derailleur bikes.

Actually, I find cages/toe clips ugly, and i like the look of velcro straps. That, and the more friction factor. I've actually been riding strapless as of 3 years ago. I've gotten used to it, but I just want straps again so I can ride fast again and not be scared i'll die, you know?

Btw @the power grips, I've been looking at those, but it looks kind of ugly..

A retention debate, again.
