Urban pedals and double gate clips

Stop giggling :notamused:
First off, this is NOT a discussion about clips vs clipless, for my purposes on this bike, clips and straps are the setup of choice - YMMV and that's cool too. I broke a toe clip on Friday which means I HAVE to buy some new bits. The other bike in my working pair has pedals that I'm not completely happy with. I've been considering the MKS Urban pedal for the large supporting platform. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=304965 The GR-9 is too narrow for my feet and although the GR-10 has a longer spindle, the Urban has a larger platform. Ground clearance isn't an issue. Normally, I'd just use a normal toe clip and single strap however, I wonder if there is any advantage to using double gate clips and double straps such as Scrod offers as a set. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=304966 I realise this sort of setup is a track setup and is designed for pulling the foot firmly into the clips. That is not how I'd be using them. I run my straps firm enough to give support but not so tight that I can't pull my foot out when stopping or pushing it in when taking off - this is very much an urban setup. I'm thinking the advantages for me would be a better distribution of pressure thanks to the larger contact area of the double gates and straps ie, improved comfort. Worth a try? |
My feet just got really happy looking at that setup. It's a justified buy since your old ones broke lol, I would definitely try it, and let me know how you like it.

i've only ever gone with single straps. but i love the look of doubles at least. looks like you know what youre doing though.

I personally use the GR-9 with that clip/strap combo and it's amazing. I used a single once before and it felt like my foot was gonna slip out, but that's me. I like the extra security and cover. Also with the double there's no troubles with pulling out your foot in case of an emergency. Boy do I know about that lol

I have that ALMOST exact setup, purchased from Scrod, and it's amazing. My feets are very happy.

I have double straps on the mks sylvan track pedals. The last time I had a single straps was when I had a bike in high school, so it's hard for me to compare. I do like how snug my foot is in the pedal and I have no issues getting my foot in and out. I have the Soma metal double toe clips because citygrounds had them on sale for $4/pr. And then I run the all city leather straps with them. The only problem was the strap would rub against the crank when I pedaled but after a mile or so everything fell into position.

If you haven't had a problem with your foot coming out while using single straps there's no compelling reason to go to double straps besides street cred.

Doubles don't twist, if you've ever had that annoying problem.
