Sram S300 or Sugino Messenger wich one would you pick and why?
I have the chance to get either one of these cranksets however still not sure wich one will suit me
better. Sram has GXP BB while Sugino uses square taper someone said to me that I can use
my current BB with Sugino crankset. Not sure about this, my bike is an Eighthinch Scrambler with
It's stock BB. I need to hear some advise on this.

The S300 looks a lot nicer. And I like that the GXP does not have the open space around the spindle (where you put the tool to remove the bottom bracket) to collect dirt and grime. But will it alter your chainline?
Even if you can use your current BB, I would still take it out, clean it, and regrease it as long as you have the crank arms off.

Since the crankset determins the BB size if you get the Sram the BB that comes with it should fix you fine.
Either way, you'll be poopin' in high cotton. (Georgia talk for doin' alright!!)
Besides I could be interested in which one you don't get. (Wifes bike)

Your cog is slipping.
I like the look of Messengers much better and - in my experience - square taper is much more reliable than GXP in the long run.

Either that or you're not a gorilla.
Angie's GXP BB is doing great (but I do weigh about 70lbs more than her). Mine, on the other hand, destroyed itself within two months. Replaced it with the same model (GXP Team), same thing happened.
I'll take square-taper any day.

Oh. I weigh like 165 normally. I had a GXP bb on my old roadie that was at least 5 years old that was still doing fine.

if his existing bb spindle is a little to long couldn't he just use that bb and maybe flip the ring to the inner position? maybe this is not possible on the messengers? sure your q factor would be a little wider but otherwise perfectly rideable... that said a new BB wouldn't cost much.

i prefer the s300's. i've had both.
from all the sw33t phixies running omniums, i don't hear a bunch of people complaining about blown bb's.

Painfully average.
No one really has to do that. OP is asking for opinions and he gave his. So what's wrong?
I like the look of both, but I've only ever had experience with Sugino RD2's (which I believe are the same arms that come on the Messengers. Correct me if I'm wrong.).
BUT, I'm almost 100% sure that both are good quality cranksets that will serve you well. Don't over think it too much and just buy the one that looks better to you.

We are generalizing from a 200lb+ guy using only back pressure for brakes to all riders. We are generalizing from 2 instances of bad GXP bbs to all of them. I like my S300s but I weigh 150 and use a brake, although I do use some back pressure and I do skid occasionally. The only good thing about Scrod's experience is that in both cases the problem was quickly revealed rather than failing at 1000 miles in or something. (Is that right?) And the failure amounted to a noise rather than something horrific, right?

My SRAM cranks have never had any issues. The GXP was easy to install and still spins like the day I put it in.

As I've also recently said elsewhere, Angie has no issues with her Omniums.
