Minneapolis msgr scoop
 

here's the deal. I want to get a messenger job when I move back to Minneapolis this June. I e-mailed the 4 companies with links on the MBMA site. one replied so far. That site says to apply as early as possible, as there are waiting lists. I am a teacher now, but I need a year or 2 off. I would like to still have food and shelter as a messenger. is that possible? Is there anything anyone can tell me that might help? companies to gravitate toward? companies to stay away from? I am most worried that there will not be enough work for me to stay busy during the day. Should that worry me? what's the haps? Thank you to all who might try to offer any advice! I am fast and determined. is that enough?

Last I checked there aren't (m)any positions that become available to those on outside looking in. However, if you can put up with St. Paul, and if you're willing to compromise on variants of the messenger job description, you may want to look into River City Pedicabs Last year's pilot project was somewhat successful, and this year hold plans for the project to take off full force. It is essentially a self-employed job; run like taxi company. As far as concerns go, I'd say that one shouldn't be too optimistic about creating a sustainable standard of living from such a job. But what do I know. I'd say the same thing about being a messenger in St. Paul, yet someone seems to have made a career out of that.

as of right now there isn't anyone hiring in minneapolis. as for jobs i would recommend just calling the companies. there isn't really a waiting list as refered to on the old site. it is like any other job. you just have to hope that they are hiring.

i have worked in downtown for two years. the pay is ****ty and there isn't all that much work to go around. but then again that is the price we pay to have a kick ass job. there are about 8 companies. none of which have any openings right now. being on the inside i don't see anyone leaving their respective job until around september or so...summer is coming...everyone wants to be on their bike....

cool thanks for the info- I just looked at the mbma site again. Where is the list of companies now!?! It was up on the old site, and now the new list page won't work. poop. Can anyone direct me to a list again? I will print it or write it down this time.

This is totally off the subject, but, what part of stl are you living in? I'm from there living in Mpls right now.
I'm also looking for a mess. job here too and haven't had any luck. I might check out that pedicab thing though.. :fight: :crash: :fight:

Central West End- Taylor and Maryland (near Euclid and Lindell). I am just excited to get back to the Twin Cities. I miss the culture dearly. How are you liking it? Do you miss StL?

I don't really miss the city that much as a whole, some of my friends, though. I really did not even ride when I lived there, I had a mess. friend that moved back to Atl. He was actually the one that put the bug back into me about bikes. He talked about fixed gear stuff and how he didn't like it for some reason. Stating that it was trendy or something. He lived in U. City, on Westgate. Okay, thinking about it kinda makes me miss it a little. Do you shop at Big Shark, or is that shop still around?
I like Mpls a hellof a lot more than back home, it has a completely differently flavor in my opinion, do you agree? And seems more bike friendly. Is the only paved bike trail there Forest Park? That's all I can remember. Oh, do you know about that old track at Kingshighway and highway 70? I was looking at an old bike book and it had a picture of some guys racing on a track in Stl. I was like hey, I know where that is.
The picture was from 1967, but I think it's still there. It was two years ago...

From spongeing up different converstions at the end of the Stupor Bowl, it sounds like if you want a messenger job in Minneapolis you should move to Chicago and look there first.

A really cool guy e'splained it all out to a friend of mine who delivers for a sandwich shop called Jimmy Johns. It sounded like their was some companies in Chicago that are very good for getting a foot in the door. Mostly because they didn't want to deal with snbby upper crusty messengers or something.

try Jimmy Johns. It's not a messenger company, but it's a delivery by bike option.
