Just put on a Devil 101 chain -- "thrum" feeling when pedaling hard?
 

i just put on a D101 chain and have a sort of "thrum" feeling thru the chainline when putting on a decent effort seated. Too tight (about 1/2 inch sag)?

This chain is very much more butch than anything i've had before (z410) so school me on this one. It's not a problem, it's just different. I'm guessing the beefier chain doing its stretch/relax on each pedal stroke is making itself known.

by thrum do you mean kind of like a vibration? if so, i get that with the 710SL chains I use. I know it's not too tight, so i just figured it was par for the course. have been wanting to try the D101 though. how is it otherwise?

I have them on all my bikes and in my experience, the D101 is very loud until it breaks in a little.

It is exactly that, a vibration. No noise, it's pretty quiet (then again my z410 was gritty and thrashed).



No idea how it compares to a 710. It's pretty, though.

Oh and get a good chain breaker; i about broke my compact Park trying to get the pins out.

I hope you're using the master link and didn't push the pin back in after breaking the chain.

Could it be new chain and old cog not meshing so well?

Yeah. It's only ever happened with more expensive chains in my experience...weird. It kind of feels like how a purring cat sounds, and only on downstrokes pedaling hard. Come to think of it though. I didn't notice it happening on my ride in this morning. Either it needs to wear in, or I just got used to it.

The devil 101 is a massive track chain. Can't feel it stretch at all, but it sounds like ww2 tank tracks, lol.

Had the same thing, dunno if it ever went away, but it never bothered me.

Yes, it is a great chain. Comparable, if not better than, izumi's super toughness for half the price.

so what makes it 5 times as good (7 bucks vs 35 or so) as the 410h in people's opinion?

all my friends ride expensive chains and i honestly have no idea why...

btw - my new chain (on an all new drivetrain) did this as well but it went away after 20-25 miles. smooth as butter now. often happens to me with a new chain on a worn drivetrain; this was the first time i experienced it with all new equipment.

Doesn't need to be five times as good. Marginal gains and price increase are almost never a linear correlation. Some people don't mind paying 5x the price of a bottom-line chain for a 2x improvement. All about what you want, think you need and indifference curves.

More expensive chains are generally stiffer, more durable and longer lasting that cheap chains. I used to switch back and forth between a SRAM PC-1 (regular 1/8" chain) and KMC 710 (beefy track chain) depending on the weather and the difference in stiffness and smoothness was noticeable. Not that it affected performance but it was possible to feel it.

I wouldn't pay $35 for a track chain, the 710 is a pretty awesome deal at $11.

I'd like to try the 101, but I doubt how much I will be gaining at thrice the cost.

It's way too heavy for your bike anyway.

I don't really care about the weight of my kilo. You do though, so that's cool.

nagrom; fyi after getting and installing the 410h it seems much beefier than the 710 is cheaper. but scrod apparently wouldn't like it on your bike cause it is heavy.

just don't understand the nice chain thing personally. too much of a wear item to spend good money on. i'd never put a nice tire on the back of the fixed gear for the same reason.

anyhow blown this one WAY off topic so i'll shut up now and keep on ridin my cheap chain until i hear a good reason to buy a pricier one.
