Went out for a 45 minute ride today. Got sick two weeks ago and still haven't quite gotten over it. Zero humidity and the city being surrounded by fire isn't really helping.

Hi @TimothyH,
I don't have any personal suggestions - I've learned what I know from reading books and applying what I've learned with HR and power data. I'd like to think that I'm fairly good at "training" at this point but I'm sure I could be fitter (at the same time expenditure) with some guidance.
I have a couple teammates at higher levels that use some of the Training Peaks canned plans and they seem to be pretty damn strong . Some of it is in their nature but they seem to speak pretty highly of the Training Peaks stuff. I'd probably look no further myself if I was going for something like that.
Good luck in your event! What is it, if you don't mind me asking?
edit: glancing at the weekly training load bar graph, it seems pretty par for the course, three one (building), one easy. I'm currently at a pretty similar level in regards to both volume and TSS, maybe 10-15% higher. The magic is going to come from the specific workouts they have you do of course.

The event is Southern Cross.
I know the basics of training - volume, duration, intensity, superadaptation, recovery and timing the next effort. I understand training with heart rate very well, mostly from reading Burke and similar. I just need some motivation and structure, that's all.
Your thoughts are really appreciated.

Naw I was thinking instead those Spynergy Rev X carbon 4-spokes that used to fail catastrophically on people before they were recalled
Actually I had some TB-14's (ano gray) laced to Gran Compe's built up at RG.
Thanks! Me too

Hey, don't shake off those Rev X's too quickly! I converted a Lemond Buenos Aires years ago and put a converted set* of Rev X tubulars on there. It was my fixed trainer for over two years and a terribly fast bike. And the most important thing................I am still alive to tell the tale.

Did a quick 25mile ride in 40 degree weather -- Did the "wrap your toes in tinfoil" trick and it worked remarkably well!

Today I lead my largest ride ever, just over 40 people from the DFW area showed to ride bikes and look at Christmas lights with me in Arlington.
(Of course there was a post-ride pub-ride, I lead that too, but headed straight home once the group reached the pub.)

Sounds fun! Do you have some pics of that? One thing I miss about the North is how many people put candles in bags and lit up their walkways with them (used to do that too, and they only caught fire sometimes lol). Don't see that or many a Christmas lights here in Atl.

I've been eating and drinking like a pig. I need to find a way to cope with the end of cyclocross season and riding less this time of year.

If you have a trainer, watch cross videos on Youtube, here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC62...able_polymer=1, or on Vimeo, here: https://vimeo.com/cxhairs, during indoor sessions.
A buddy just offered me his rollers. Might take my own advice.

About a week ago I started to restrict the calories I consume and am making an effort to change the types of food consumed to more nutrient dense, lower calorie choices.
One thing I've done is to start tracking everything I eat in a website which gives calorie, sodium, protein, fat, carb, etc. info on a daily basis. I'm using Super Tracker which is from the USDA. Others in the nutrition forum use MyFitnessPal. MyFitnessPal uses your phone to scan in the QR or UPC bar code from your food labels.
It is amazing what you can learn just by documenting and looking at what is eaten. Three spoons of peanut butter and three spoons of jelly are 450 calories. Yikes! Adding Mayo to a sandwich adds 60 calories. Looking at it written down and being able to substitute healthier foods and see the result ahead of time makes me stop and think.

Start a weekly group ride? If there is enough interest. Or just find one guy or gal to make you feel guilty about not riding.

Definitely a challenge for non-pro athletes..

1.75 hr MTB commute this morning, about 75/25 trail/road. Great ride. Cold down there in the canyon bottoms by the creeks - lots of frost. My legs felt stiff and uncooperative at first and I thought of cutting it short, but I loosened and warmed up eventually.

Went out for a 32 mile road ride. Did not feel good, but glad to at least be getting in some miles again. Haven't been able to ride much for the past month.
