Disc Brake fork for Steamroller

Has anyone ran a front disc brake on the surly steamroller? Looking for recommendations for a fork that doesn't completely change the steering.

Thanks

I think custom is really the only thing you'll find. Everything else seems to be 25+mm too long. Just get some Kool Stop Salmon pads and call it good.

What's the rake and axle to crown measurement on the stock fork?

lubes17319 05-14-13 02:00 PM

Axle-To-Crown (1" steerer): 368mm
Axle-To-Crown (1-1/8" steerer): 375mm
Rake: 38mm

I was looking at those numbers not long ago, and found myself wondering how/why axle-to-crown measurement differs between the two steer tube sizes.

disc trucker 26" fork is 376mm (45mm rake).....steamroller 700c fork is 375mm (38mm rake)...
the 26" long haul fork will def fit a 700c wheel....

have a local frame builder weld on some disc mounts.

The disc trucker 700c fork will work it looks like. I can't imagine I'll notice the difference in steering.

I might do this.

Interesting. Maybe I'll just go with a disc capable fork then

this might seem real crazy but a caliper brake will go right on the fork you already have

max-a-mill 05-15-13 11:43 AM

to further the above point:

rim = giant disc rotor

get some new brake pads clean your rim and call it a day.

for your next bike buy one made for disc brakes.

in theory....in practice not even close....the cheapest wire pull disks are infinitely better than the best rim brakes

I wouldn't say that, I've dealt with some major turds when it comes to mechanical disc brakes. Outside of cross and tandems, the only reasons really for disc brakes on road is that the brake pads that are for the carbon rims won't stop carbon rims when it's cold or wet and to dissipate the heat seen on tubulars.

The issue I see coming is that braking on a road bike works on a different theory than what you would with a disc brake. A road caliper/rim brake is supposed to provide adequate friction to come to a stop/keep speed modulated when descending, a disc brake uses force in order to have a quicker stop. All in all, my gut feeling is telling me it's the industry trying to shove a new thing down people's throats instead of figuring out how to make a pad compound that will work on a carbon rim in all conditions.

the quality of improvements you get by upgrading the pads and disk far exceeds that which can be had with any sort of rim brake. Some see it as the industry trying to force something new I just look at it as evolution....for a full time commuter its a smart choice.

Ok so back to the original question; Surly disc trucker 26' fork is probably the safest bet then?

this might interest you. running a 45mm rake, but with the fat tire it works out.

McRussellPants 05-17-13 11:16 AM

This thing is gonna have gnarly fork shudder isn't it? Most disc CX bikes are using 1.5in crowns to get away from that.

johnnytheboy 05-17-13 11:19 AM

chatter usually only happens with canti's on cross bikes....but there's a fork mount that improves that.
