SRAM Omnium on a single speed?

Can I use an SRAM Omnium Crank Set on a single speed bike?

I'm Semi-new to bike service and maintenance. I am looking to upgrade my factory crank set and bottom bracket on my Trek Soho S. I know the Omnium is advertised for track bikes and fixies, but could it be used on a single speed? Any further advice is appreciated.

Of course you can.

I have heard that the Omnium is a higher-end crank set. Any suggestions on a mid-level upgrade?

Sugino RD2

Or Sram S-300.

Anyone have any suggestions or testimonies with either of those crank sets or another not mentioned?

I dont have experience with either, but the sram is the best bang for your buck in that department

I have RD-2s, when I follow directions the chainline comes out nice. When I push on the pedal the bike goes forward.

Thanks for the heads up everyone. The Omnium is probably where I'll go. Given that I'm somewhat of a newb with servicing my own ride, are any specs in particular I should be aware of that may make the crank incompatible for my Trek Soho S? Up to this point, I only know I will go with the 170mm. (teeth, bcd, etc?)

Nothing makes the crank incompatible with your bike.

And don't use the goddamn spacers the GXP comes with.

Some frames have clearance issues with the Omniums because they're thicker than a lot of other cranks.

lazyocho 05-27-13 05:21 PM

Yes, I have read about that. With my current stock setup, I have 6mm of clearance between my chainring and frame.

It'll probably be fine, but honestly I think Omniums are overkill for you. The S300s will serve you just as well at a much lower price.

I have read about them also...............I didn't gather that clearance between the chainring and the frame was the major concern or problem. Must have been a different batch of posts.

Explain what you think the difference is between a fixie and a singlespeed... I'm curious to hear.
