Bike Build Help!

Hello everyone,

I am relativley new to fixed gear riding, less than a year in the saddle, and would really like to build my first bike. I would like to do this for two reasons, my previous bike, a converted schwinn that weighed about 35 lbs, was stolen, and I feel that building my own bike would just be a lot of fun. So, what I would like is some feedback on the components I've selected, and some suggestions on alertnative components. I would like to spend less than $600 for the total build

Frame

I would like to go cheaper on the crankset and BB but honestly don't know whats good and what isnt good. This is the Crankset and BB I currently have picked out.

Pedals

This is what I have picked out so far. I haven't decided on a seat, bars, straps, or a back wheel (I have a front). As far as bars go I'm having a hard time. The ones on my stolen bike were modified drop bars I cut off into bullhorn bars. The width was perfect, about 34cm, but the only bullhorn bars I can find at that width are made by nitto and they arent really bullhorn bars. I can always just do what I did last time, but if theres another option I would like to hear it.

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Decent cranks, Mks sylvan pedal, some cages, and double straps off retro-gression.com
rear wheel, I say black hplusson to formulas, not a fan of amazon frames though

So I'm going to put down the prices of the bare minimum that you would want to spend.
Frame $155
BB/Crank $115
BBT-19 $18
Rear wheel $60
pedals $24
Straps $10
cog $16
lockring $10
chain $8
bars $20
stem $20
seatpost $20
seat $20
brake $30
lever $20
tires $30
total = $576 + shipping.

If you don't do everything through amazon prime the shipping will put you over your budget already and what have you got? A bike whose only good component is the crankset/bottom bracket.
If you don't have things like a lockring tool and a chainwhip those should go into your budget as well.

Buy a complete bike like the Windsor the Hour or Kilo TT. Get yourself a nice saddle, good pedals and tools and learn to service it. You'll be much happier.

Just gonna wheelie everywhere?

He said he had a front wheel.

I didn't know they made external bearings specifically for fix/single. Are there other offerings, particularity in polished aluminum?

Thanks for your input. I thought about it for about 30 seconds, and then bought an se premium brew hahah So I'm under budget and can afford to get the ugly blue graphics powdercoated whatever I want for $100 (local bike shop) and get a saddle that doesn't have somebodies initials on it. I think I won? Oh and I went with the Brew because lugged frames are my lover

CyclingDaily 06-06-13 01:23 AM

Cool so you just totally ignored all of our suggestions and went with a fashion accessory, and now you're wasting money on a paint job. I see why most people ignore these kind of threads. Im disappointed in myself.

prooftheory 06-06-13 04:32 AM

Dude, he did what I suggested and bought a complete bike and a pretty good one for the price at that.

That has nothing to do with any of us.

gregjones 06-06-13 07:09 AM

Hell, yeah he did good. He got a RD2 crankset with a Messenger ring and Tektro brake levers for $200. Not bad.

The great deal is the rest of the bike for another $200.:p

Scrodzilla 06-06-13 07:22 AM

OP - just be careful of pedal strike. The Premium Brew is not a track frame and has a considerably low BB.

calv 06-06-13 10:13 AM

I think he won. I don't think I've ever seen anyone here with a horrible build thread and end up with a bike that's actually pretty good.

I used to have pedal strike all the time on that old schwinn. Any suggestions to avoid it other than to ride SS or just be careful?

Use the narrowest pedal you can comfortably put your foot on. And be careful.

Keep the bike upright when you're cornering.

You seem to go from giving bad advice in some threads to being a general butthole when for once on ssfg it isn't at all warranted.

Cut it out.
