Gusset single speed conversion kit
Anyone have experience with Gusset single speed conversion kits? Can these be used for road bike conversions? From their website, it looks like they're for MTB or BMX bikes.

You can get the same results with a bmx cog or the cog out of a cassette, a fist full of spacers and a cassette lockring. Your local bike shop could probably fix you up for pocket change.
The spacers give you a lot more flexability on chainline also. |
I have it on my mtb and works fine, should work just as well in a road bike. Looks better than spacers, but like stated before, there's less flexibity for chainline adjustments.
|
To me it defeats the whole 'simpler is better philosophy' to buy an off the shelf product, but hey, if it gets you where you're going.
|
Save your $30 and use spacers. My lbs was selling a kit of alu spacers for $10 that would give you both the flexibility and look of the production one.

Cassette spacers are the only way to go. I think the "single speed conversion kits" are just a way for people to capitalize on the emerging fad. The right tools, some cassette spacers and some ingenuity will do wonders here, for starters you can convert a bike for basically free.
|
I should add that spacers are thin slices of a 2" abs pipe. If you find a bit lying around, then it is free custom spacer time.
