Affordable good fixie wheel set
 

Hi guys,

I just moved over to fixed gear riding and absolutely hooked. Such a pure n simple way to ride. Anyways, I upgraded my frame to a cinelli mash and got some nice sram omnium cranks. Now I'm looking to spend roughly 6-700 bucks on a good pair of wheels. I'm riding in NYC and do about 200miles a week. Can u give some advice to what I should look for. There are too many options. My friend from France is a dam good rider and is cruising on 88carbon rim and a trispoke. I don't wanna waste cash on a good looking wheel, just want quality and something that makes sense for the city and some 50-80 mile rides. Also which hub should go along with the wheels?

TT's recommendation seems solid. If you were an ebay fiend you might be able to get a trispoke and a 80mm carbon wheel in your price range, but it would be chinacarbon and probably worse than the campy wheels.

TT is joking. Those Campy Pistas are tubular, overpriced track training (practice) wheels...that cost around $700.

Stubear, a track wheelset is "good enough" at around $200 (new). Spending more than that wont get you much more functionality...if anything at all.

Being that you seem new to bikes and equipment, you'll soon find out that there is A LOT of hype in the sales and marketing of it. It's because bikes are essentially a mature product (like shaving razors and pizza) so it's up to the hype machines to convince you to spend more.

I think I'm going to pick up these when they come back in stock based on other threads and recommendations.

These work well for me on the Manhattan Streets (though I avoid potholes as much as possible).
I also have a set of Deep V's (what ever came on the Premium Brew) that are holding up just fine.

Ah ok I see. A friend of mine says he knows a guy in Canada tht makes some good carbon rims for 400each. And good quality. Are those worth having those wheels in the city?


I'm new to Fixed gears but have been riding for 15 years or so and consider myself a strong rider. Just looking to enhance my riding and training experience.

Nobody needs carbon wheels for riding a fixed gear on the street.

Ok, so that rules out carbons. And the hubs? Worth spending some cash on those?

Check out the Miche Express. Lovely light wheels with hubs that spin forever at decent prices and able to handle the real world. As an added bonus (for this build), they have the bit of racing cache.
