Good helmet?
 

What's up you guys, I'm looking to invest in a good helmet for my rides. I took a decent fall and don't want to injure my head next time and was wondering if you guys have any advice on good helmets?

Depends on your head. Go to a shop and try some on. Any of the helmets there will protect your head. As prices increase, you're paying for decreased weight, increased comfort, and a better looking product. A $100 helmet from Giro, Bell, Specialized, or any other company won't offer better protection than a $40 helmet from the same company, but you will almost certainly wear it more often.

i went for a lazer 02 from bikeisland for $80

i didnt want to go on trying on helmets for size so i got a helmet with an adjustable fit

i like it. doesnt make me look like a mushroom and it doesnt weigh 50 pounds either

The "best" helmet is one that fits, is comfortable and one you are willing to wear. As stated above, visit a LBS, try on a few and make a selection. There ARE "better" helmets but all in all it's only as good as it fits. the strap that holds it in place and the riders willingness to put it on. You can pay top dollar or as little as $40 or so. Just pick on and go ridin'.

I have a giro flak, it was cheap, but it's clunky.

I have three Bells, two Sweeps and a Volt. They fit and are comfy. I used to have Giros, but they didn't fit and gave me headaches, so I changed. I always buy the previous year's model on sale at the end of the year to save $$.

What's your price range?

If you're looking at lower-cost helmets, I'm a huge fan of my new Bell Alchera. My previous helmet was a cheapy Schwinn. The Bell is insanely breathable and it looks pretty good, IMO. They're only like $40 on Amazon, and I think I got mine from my LBS for around $50.

Not sure if this applies to you, but I have a huge head and the size large fits me beautifully.

Definitely try a variety of helmets on before buying.

My helmet doesn't fit very well, a consequence of ordering online without trying one on. I've compensated with foam.

There are two items that I will never buy online, unless I've previously bought the identically same item: cycling shoes and helmets.

smart indeed, though ive bought both and ive had god luck with both, however i compared the sizing on the shoes to one i had already tried on and the helmet is sort of a one size fits all job

Fixed-gear bikes need very special helmets though so make sure you don't get one of those they talk about in the advocacy and safety forum.

I'm a fan of BERN if you want that urban cyclist look. Try Giro (i have the prolight) if you want a road cyclist lightweight style.
