Need advice on a chain
I need a new chain soon and have to decide which one to pick. I am currently using the KMC z410 which came with my bike. 1 month of use with no problems but I need to change the rear cog which will probably require me to lengthen the chain a bit. I want to go with the KMC z510hx but it has mushroom shaped rivets and this being my first chain fitting myself, I'm a bit wary of the mushroom shapes. Anyway, should I go with the 510 or the 410? Does the mushroom shape change the way I should install the chain in any way?
Sorry, these are probably nooby questions but I couldn't find any helpful info anywhere |
I haven't gotten much life out of regular Z510H chains, the HX may be better. More experienced people should chime in shortly. :thumb:

Never heard of the mushroom rivets being a problem. Is this a fixie or freewheel? I like to go heavy on the chain, I've broke a few, including a 410.
EDIT: love me some 710 |
The mushroomed pins can be problematic because they're not designed to be pushed back in once removed. It's better to use the master link.

EDIT: love me some 710 I can get a k710 for a few dollars more than the z510hx. Is there any reason I should go with the 710 instead of the 510?

The K710-SL is one of my favorite chains. Yes, it comes with a master link.

Unless you're deadset on a KMC, I'd check out the SRAM PC7X. Basically just a beefcake version of the popular PC1.

I had a PC1 for awhile. Now, I have a KMC X9something. No problem with either. I just ride my bikes and it's just a chain. At the first sign of any troubles, I will worry.
Oh yeah, I lube them every now and then, when I think about it and don't have anything else to do. Cleaning consists of running the chain through a clean rag. As soon as my method fails, I will search for something better. |
