NYC: vacation ride

I'm here (on Houston St) until Sunday and the streets are now drying out. Who wants to go on a ride?

.....and lend me a bike.....because I couldn't afford to ship mine.

This thread's going to be huge, I know.
Where can I get a good bagel?

Good bagels are harder to come by around here than you'd think. Bad bagels, now THOSE you can find.

(I'd join in, but I just started riding, and not yet ready for public appearances.)

iamjberube 03-02-05 10:34 AM

i can contribute a crankset, handlebars, bb, saddle, chain, and chainring. :D

kenzan 03-02-05 11:00 AM

the only bagel you want is an H and H they have a bakery on the west sidehighway somewhere, and a store uptown. but they supply bagles to a lot of delis.

brokenrobot 03-02-05 11:21 AM

The cheapest place I know of to get H&H bagels is at East Village Cheese (3rd ave at roughly 10th st, Manhattan) - but get there early. Or, if you want a *good* bagel, head out to the Bagel Hole, 7th Ave at 12th St in Brooklyn.

luckycat 03-02-05 11:22 AM

H&H is okay, but if you're on Houston st, go up first ave to Ess-A-Bagel. They are on first ave around 21st st, on the west side of the street. Much better bagels, in my opinion.

FixednotBroken 03-02-05 12:31 PM

i'll second the ess-a-bagel tip. i ride past there every morning, and sometimes the pleasant wafting odors tempt me to stop in.

on houston, doesn't yonah schimmel (sp?) have bagels? i know their knishes are fantastic.

luckycat 03-02-05 12:35 PM

Yeah, Yonah Schimmel's got bagels, they aren't so good though, better to stick with the knishes there(cool old place too). Or even a bialy at Kossars on grand and essex st, they have pretty decent bagels too.

neuron 03-02-05 12:37 PM

might stop by times up! i think they have loaner/beater bikes... dunno about fixed though. probably not. :)

49 e houston, if they haven't moved yet...

raygunner 03-02-05 01:03 PM

Whatever, Columbia Bagels are where it's at. 2836 Broadway (@110th St.). 24 Hours.

ch0mb0 03-02-05 01:50 PM

There's a great place right off of Grand St. & Essex St. just a few doors down from "Doughnut Plant"
They got great bagels and bialys...cheap

edb 03-02-05 02:16 PM

Forget the bagels -- get a pistachio doughnut from the Doughnut Plant!

turd 03-02-05 02:23 PM

and while you're on grand, get some pickles from guss :D

luckycat 03-02-05 02:25 PM

I haven't seen the pistachios there in a while(I live a couple blocks away), but they do have jelly doughnuts now... Oh, if you do stop there get the hot chocolate, I don't even like hot chocolate and think it's amazing.

raygunner 03-02-05 02:31 PM

Hey!

What about that Beard Papa place?

It is any good?

turd 03-02-05 02:35 PM

I've been wondering about that place as well, never been though...

raygunner 03-02-05 02:45 PM

I read about it in The Economist of all places. Hell, it's my first stop when I get in. I'm gonna buy a big fanny pack so I can squirrel away a few...

ultra-g 03-02-05 03:18 PM

I can offer a Specialized or Bontrager stem. :D

Good bagels: H&H on Broadway and 80th Street. Best in NYC.

ultra-g 03-02-05 03:19 PM

Beard Papa is the sh=it.

There's one on 76th & Broadway.

drulu 03-02-05 03:24 PM

forget bagels. go to chinatown and pick up some fresh BUNS. pork puns, sweet buns, chicken buns, black bean buns, red bean buns. buns galore. and cheap.

Stop by Times up on thursday night for movie night with some awesome people.

Times up helps and promotes the critical mass's in NYC and Brooklyn.

www.times-up.org for more info.

They are on 49 East Houston St between mott and mulberry.

We also have a fix your own bike workshop that night, you might be able to score your self a loaner!

adamkell 03-02-05 03:45 PM

thanks everyone.

I went downtown today and while coming back I walked past Times Up and the knish place. I plan to be at Times Up's Bladerunner screening tomorrow night and might check on loaner bikes, though I've been doing pretty well on foot -- as far south as Wall St, and as far north as 89th. I might get out to Brooklyn tomorrow. I need to get a knish now.

I'm so impressed with this city...hope I can move here after graduation.

what's that messenger site with the breakdown on cities around the world: no. of messengers, best cheap eats, cost of a new tube...?
