Single speed brake help!!
Hey guys. I am in the process of converting my 21 speed hybrid into a single speed with a flip flop hub. With non machined deep v wheels, for example retrospect or pure fixed cycle wheels, would brakes work very well on them? Or would it be better to find different wheels (non deep v)? Thanks guys!

Are radius brakes good for fixies?
Building a fixie/single speed using flip flop hub deep v wheels. Are radius brakes good? And do they rub against they tire leaving marks and scratches on them?
|
The brakes will still work, they'll just wear off any anodizing which will look ugly/weird for a while but then start looking sort of okay.

You mean like this? That just looks like rebranded tektro.
|
Oh boy.
Take your bike to a shop and have the brakes installed before you end up with a sidewall blowout. |
I was just reading "tire" to mean "rim". I didn't imagine anyone worrying about the paint on their tires.
|
Oh. Makes sense now.
In any case, what I said minus the blowout bit. |
Kevin, you should post some photos of your bike before purchasing anything. If you really are converting a hybrid with cantilever or V-brakes, possibly a suspension fork, and lots of tire clearance then those Radius brakes won't work for you. Or go to a bike shop.

if you had machined walls you could rough 'em p by sanding them a bit and then you will have better stopping force. I mean they still work stop enough but when the door flies open a few feet in front of you you're gonna wish for better ones. besides, nothing looks worse on brand new painted rims than black skid marks on the sides.
|
WHY OH WHY would you skimp on the only thing that makes you stop!?
Get wheels that have a proper brake track. Get brakes that work and get them adjusted properly by a shop if you (as you say) are a newb and not familiar with it. |
