Frames at around the $500 (give or take 100) mark

I'm thinking of a new frame - aside from a custom job (which is what I want my next ride to ultimately be) I was curious about frames at around the $500, give or take $100, mark.

Frames off the top of my head -
DeBenardi
Surly
Soma
Nessuno/EAI
Pista Concept

What else is out there?

baxtefer 03-07-05 05:56 PM

marinoni.
$650 CAD apparently. (i'm going to check on this this weekend at my LBS)
custom TIGed ZONA.

bensbike milwaukee cycle. made by waterford. $450 frame+fork+headset.

raygunner 03-07-05 07:12 PM

Is that why those things are so pricey?

I can't figure out if it will accept a front brake.

BostonFixed 03-07-05 07:40 PM

Well considering a picture shows a front brake being used, I'd say yes! ;)

Yes, its lugged. 4130 chromoly.

My custom frame is finished (ordered it a month ago) and is currently in the paint shop getting custom painted.

All total it will be about $450.00 (I think) for custom geo and custom paint plus stainless steel track ends.

Once I get mine I'll post pictures and comments.

brunning 03-07-05 09:58 PM

what size are you? if you're a 57, buy that beautiful 1971 mercian frame for sale in the buy/sell forum. it's the nicest track frame i've ever seen!!

What kind of ends did you get? Hopefully their prices won't shoot up over the summer... methinks I'll be looking into one quite seriously.

absntr,
i like the olmo gara pista, for frames in your price range. dedaccia (sp?) tubing. their fairly light and have race geometry. va-room!

I guess some generic stainless steel. Nothing fancy like the Paul Component ends. They will either be full stainless like Waterford ends, or SS plates which are fitted on regular chromoly ends (I assume the later).

I like them for the most part - I hate that downtube though. I can't get past non-roundish tubes. Damn them aesthetics!

I didn't know Bulltek carried track frames - I called them up earlier this week about a Cinelli Alter stem (they have one in silver in 130 - I need a 100 or lower) - nice people/person (Xavier).

After having seen the new Steamrollers in that metallic black I'm sort of tempted.

However, what prompted all this is that ever since I've been replacing stuff on the Pista I have, I realized I have enough stuff again for another bike (even though I sold all the parts of my old ride). I recently scored a set of RB009 Nitto bullhorns and since I have a matching 25.4 stem for it, I started thinking, oooh, new frame. Threaded. I even still have a threaded carbon fork...

So, I was thinking of finding another steel vintage looking ride, in the old school. While conversion crossed my mind again, I love the feel of track so I'm hoping to eventually score an older track frame. I did think this would be agood thread to collect frames at this price point though.

emayex 03-08-05 12:17 PM

the bigest reason why i have not upgraded to a real track frame is my fear of having to pick one.....when you start looking there are so many in this very reasonable price range....

mcatano 03-08-05 01:14 PM

Might as well add these into the mix. The guy is bad at promoting himself, but the frames look really nice and he seems totally on the level.
