Track Standing and Skidding

Does anyone else keep the other foot in front depending on what you're doing? I feel more comfortable with my right foot in front when im trackstanding and my right in back when skidding, or at least attempting to.

bostontrevor 03-09-05 09:46 AM

Yup, that's generally my rule.

timmhaan 03-09-05 09:47 AM

curious - are you right handed as well? my dominate hand seems to match my dominate foot as well. i wonder if that's the case with others.

i am right handed as well, but when I used to skate i skated regular and when i snowboard i can do switch pretty comfortably, ths is just to complicate things a little more.

*new*guy 03-09-05 10:22 AM

i'm left handed but tend to favor my right foot forward for both. If you're looking to get comfy skidding with your other foot forward, practice in the wet until you build confidence.

absntr 03-09-05 10:27 AM

I skid and trackstand with my right. However, I can also skid with my left in slicker conditions. Right handed as well and skate regular (though isn't that the norm and not the exception?) but I skate all mongol style and do the right foot on back end and then bring the left foot up front. Though I can also skate the other way too (left foot front and right foot to back). I like the ability to switch things up I suppose.

I've played drums for years and that led to a lot of ambidextrous action - at least that's what I contribute it to.

mcatano 03-09-05 10:35 AM

My right leg is stronger than my left (also a drummer) so I find it easier to skid with my right foot in the rear (I guess I do more pushing down than pulling up, if that makes sense...), but I've been really conscious about switching legs for skids, as I don't want to hurt one knee more than the other. I mean, I don't really want to hurt either knee at all, but you know...

But yeah, I think everybody naturally favors one leg or the other.

I skid with both feet, but I'm a little more partial to my right foot. I can hardly track stand with my left foot in front, and I'm right handed but do most things (like throw a ball) with my left hand. I'm all over the place. Not really ambidextrous because what I can do with one I can almost never do with the other.

inkdwheels 03-09-05 10:56 AM

I can trackstand with either, and i skid mainly with my right foot back, but if i do it without thinking, i do fine with my left too. When i go to skip though its almost always with the right foot back. Right handed, skate regular, but im like absntr and i leave my right foot back and push with my left.

That is just FREAKY!

Judah 03-09-05 11:08 AM

I can skip just either way without issue, skidding is a little harder with my left foot back, but doable, and I can't trackstand worth a damn either way :(

shiftlessbast- 03-09-05 11:35 AM

I trackstand with my left forward, since my wheel is usually cocked around 45 degrees to the left due to the ridiculously crowned streets in Denver. Before I recently changed my gearing, I had sometimes been trackstanding with my left almost at 12 and my right at 6. Go figure. I can skip w/either foot forward pretty comfortably, but always skid with my right forward.

I have been trying to teach myself to ride backwards lately, and have a feeling that the balance shift needed for making it through more than one pedal rotation is going to diminish my dominant foot tendencies. Plus I'll have a circus trick to fall back on if I lose my job.

travsi 03-09-05 12:40 PM

it mainly has to do with what you are most comfortable with …and which your "chocolate foot" is. the term refers to the (dominant) foot which you have in the back while skating, surfing or riding (coasting). but i wasn't aware that some people can trackstand with one foot and skid with the other. personally i stand and skid with right back. i've been practicing with right forward only with little luck.

Jesse M 03-09-05 01:55 PM

i trackstand and skid with my left foot forward, skate regular, and am right handed. i've been trying to learn how to skid and trackstand "switch", but i need to practice a whole lot more.

gally99 03-09-05 02:01 PM

i can only skid with my right, pretty much only trackstand with my left except on really small bikes, and when i skated i rode goofy and mongo... go figger...

stinkyonions 03-09-05 07:11 PM

you people still trackstand with your feet on the pedals?

psh...

Fugazi Dave 03-09-05 08:27 PM

I generally skid with my right foot in back. I'm to the point where I can skip in just about any position. Trying to get more comfortable skidding the other way. Still can't trackstand for sh*t.

loaf 03-09-05 11:36 PM

oh man, so many people skate mongo! I skid with mostly left foreward and skate regular (using my back foot to push). I usually trackstand that way too, but that may explain why I'm not so hot at it. I should give it a try the other way to see if I can do better.

the_loin 03-10-05 02:40 AM

This past couple of weeks was the first with egg beaters. I found it's easier to remove your foot BEFORE tipping over at the stoplight, especially the foot on the down side. 7 degrees of twist is hard when your on your side. I'm pretty sure I looked like a total jack a** twitching around in the crosswalk fully attached to my ride.

To be on topic, I can't yet skid, well, a little, but I'm not going to claim it yet. I am better at trackstanding with left front, but better means I have done it, and that's about all. I can skip a little, no foot pref yet.

I skate reg, push reg, but I taught myself to push and ride goofy, I just couldn't rock the mongo, not even for switch. Not that I hate it cause of looks, I just didn't like the feel. I never got props for switch tricks though cause I looked so normal pushing and riding goofy, but it does kinda trip people out on occasion. That sounds like I'm all switched out, but really I'm not that good at it, I just wanted to be smooth into fakie tricks.

Where's the sticky thread for skate peeps? We could be hooking up the ride/bar/ride/skate/ride/bar/ride/bar, etc.

K, my newbie a** is gonna let this thread get back to normal, hope someone got a laugh at least.

jim-bob 03-10-05 12:04 PM

I trackstand with my right foot forward and skid with my left hand.

I've rigged up this crazy device - by squeezing a lever on my handlebars, i pull a cable which then squeezes bits of rubber against the rim. I think it's got potential to really take off, mark my words.
