Fixie Commuting
Don't know if this has already been talked about, but I was just wondering how far everyone commutes to either school or work...
I am going to start commuting 30 miles on my fixie. Just wondering if that seems like a realistic thing 2 to 3 times a week. Maybe more. Liv |
I do 15 miles round trip every day, and I will do 30 today, because I work tonight, and I had a meeting this morning.
Any excuse for a ride. |
sweet...
its actually 30 miles one way..so round trip it will be 60 |
if you've got enough time to do that commute then do it. I dont know if id be able to wake myself up in time for that type of commute though
|
18 miles total trip distance. Uphill there, downhill on the way home (for the most part)
Every day, all year. Doubt I'd consider a 60 mile total trip, that's a bit hearty. :D |
What kind of route do you have? 30 miles is of course possible, seems like it might take a while if you have to stop for intersections and whatnot though. I do a massive four miles each way on my fixie. :)
|
I have a 40 mile round trip commute- and a shower at work- and an empty room for my bike.
I think I'm in heaven. now if only this ice would all melt... |
my commute is only about 3 miles each way, but sometimes i'm so tired at 5:30 i can barely muster the strength to ride home. 30 miles each way is hardcore.
what if it starts pouring while you're at work? i can always leave my bike here and take the subway home. |
I'm starting a 30 mile round trip commute as soon as we move into our new office (showers at the new place). You might want to do the ride on a weekend to see how you're going to feel when you get there. If nothing else, its a good excuse for a ride. Oh yeah, and learn the bus routes too, in case of a freak blizzard.
|
i forgot my commute distance. my commute during the school year is 2-3 miles each way depending on which way i decide on that morning. in the summer its a 5 mile each wy commute. i often find myself wishing for a bit longer commute and then one day i get rained on and them im satisfied with 2 miles.
|
my commute is about 16 miles round trip, 4x per week... sometimes i cut that down to 4 miles with the help of our light rail system.
|
8mi each way. Sometimes I go on longer, prettier routes (Rainier, the Sound, Lake Washington, Arboretum, etc), bringing it up a few miles and minutes.
I'd have less energy if I didn't commute on the bike. But 30mi each way is a bit much [edit: for me, that is]. Austin's got some pretty good hills, if you're on the Western side. I've never gone faster than I did on 2222 - freewheel enabled of course. Our buses here have bike racks, which means you can ride and ride if you need. I know there are some buses in Austin, but I never really paid them attention. What's your commute like (routes?)? |
On occasion I'll ride into school, which is 30 miles round trip, although I base this mostly on my schedule for that particular day and to a lesser extent the weather. To do that commute I have to traverse the entire length of Chicago's south side, which can get a little scary in parts, although I've never really had a problem other than flats. That's why scheduling is an issue, I don't want to ride through the hood after dark. Train = quicker and safer but not as fun.
This ride takes me about an hour or a little less each way, but I usually stop for lights. I can't imagine doing 30 each way 2-3 times a week, I think I would be worried about getting worn out by the end of the day. But most importantly, more power to you if you start doing this commute regularly. I have much respect. |
matt chester used to commute 40 miles - http://www.singlespeed.net/leadville.htm
I read it on the internet so it's got to be true. I commute 1 mile everyday. now that's hardcore! |
I commute 24 miles round trip every day, 7 days a week. It makes it easier to get through the day knowing I have a nice long ride ahead of me. Even if it is almost always raining....
60 miles is a beast of a commute. Hats off if you can do it!! |
My commute to class is about a mile at best, so I look at it as a full sprint. It means I can wake up 2-3 minutes before my class, pull some pants on and race over to get there on time. Helps to wake me up a little too. I'm so used to the traffic and parking on that road that I keep getting there faster and faster. I really wouldn't mind a longer commute though, except on rainy days.
|
15 miles round trip, Brooklyn->Times Square and back. I love it. No showers at work though -- I make sure to shower immediately before leaving the house, which seems to help.
|
My commute is 4 1/2 miles to work, but the ride back can be much longer.
|
MY commmute is 40 miles RT, about 2 or 3 times a week depending on how long I have to be at work.
|
my commute is only about 6 miles but it's my own little TT and interval training in one. i like to keep track of my times, just for fun, and with the lights and what not it becomes like a big interval set.
it's funny how i can ride all day at an endurance pace and feel fine but i can go all out for fifteen minutes and just feel like i wanna puke when i get home. |
Hrmm...Monday and Friday we're looking at about 11 miles round trip. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we're looking at closer to 20 or so. I'm such a wimp.
|
im doing 16-20 miles round trip, depending on the route i choose, somedays the shorter route some days longer. Some days i do the Cliff House uphill somedays i just cut through the park. Im pretty lucky with my route, i stop (or am interupted 5-6 times), the rest is mad mash.
|
my commute varies from 6-8 miles round trip. it's always three miles to school because i take the most direct route, and it's a pretty steep, very long descent. on the way home i often take the five mile route--longer but more gradual of an ascent.
|
oh man I wish I had an excuse to ride that much. My school's under 2 miles away, but on the plus side, I can wake up 5 mins before class and sprint much like Shiznaz. In the morning I just have to ride down a long hill and I'm there, but the ride home is killer. Most of the time I don't have to put my feet on the ground.
|
about 5 miles each way.
waaaay too many stop lights though. but sometimes I like to take a 15 mile detour. |
