problems with singlespeed bike

hi guys, i have mtb frame with vertical dropout and i made it singlespeed without a tensioner but it needed a little scarping for the tension of the chain. but i have problems with centering the wheel now and sometimes when i tighten mu rear wheel it spins slower ( mu hub is brand new). i scarped the frame on the both sides. can i fix this?

CharlyAlfaRomeo 11-17-13 03:59 AM

Come again but in English this time please? What do you mean by "scarping"?!?

howeeee 11-17-13 05:04 AM

thats why everyone told you not to use a frame without horizontal dropouts,,but you didnt listen. No i dont think you can fix it

Perhaps he means scraped, that is he filed the drop-outs a little. Sounds like he has problems centering the wheel and possibly has some issues with the wheel bearings tightening up if he cranks the wheel nuts.

scarping the frame to be closer to the front chainring...

Get a tensioner and the bearings in your hub are too tight. Nobody knows what scarping is.

Scarping is an English word. Look it up.

Not sure how it applies to bicycles, though:

scarp (v): Cut or erode (a slope or hillside) so that it becomes steep, perpendicular, or precipitous

the tension isn't problem now, centering the wheel is the problem

I suspect its use was the result of looking up a word in an italian-english dictionary.

Time to scarper, methinks.

Sounds like he filed/cut his dropouts. I'm guessing since he removed material to move his wheel further foward he likely created too much float space for the axle to move, which is causing alignment issues.

Sounds like you created more problems then you solved.

I'm not sure I understand everything, but it sounds like he needs to re-dish his wheel.

No, his wheel is centered it just isn't going in straight because he didn't scarp an even amount from both sides.

Huffandstuff 11-17-13 08:38 PM

Scarp more out to make it even?, it might also be overtightened on the cone nuts cause it to not spin smoothly?

stilltooslow 11-17-13 09:55 PM

This has gotten way too confusing.

Bring it over. I need to have a look.

Good idea, can we have some pictures of the scarped dropouts and the wheel as it sits on the bike now?

On my scarper bike, on my scarper bike, on my scarper bike...

jlafitte 11-18-13 09:09 PM

Just don't get too close to the escarpment.

Yeah, I think this dude just needs to put some more tin foil on his spokes.
