Off the top of my head, the only fully synthetic thing that comes to mind is the Shimano® SH-SD60 SPD. But it's a sandal.

leather/meat VS. plastic/oil

How are they (geckos) for walking? (im no expert on clipless but i understand that walking on the er... part you put into the shoe instead of the sole is an issue)

dolface 03-17-05 12:49 PM

i oftern wear the geckos all day, no problems so far.

but thanks for the input everyone!!

They are pricier than 50 bucks, but I'm pretty sure all Sidi shoes are synthetic, and they are about as good as cycling shoes get. I got a pair of the old MTB Rampa (i think thats what they were called...the all-silver ones) for $70 at the Seattle REI a year or so ago. Great fit, great for walking around in, and who doesn't dig the Italian stuff?

habitus 03-17-05 01:14 PM

yeah, sidi uses lorica instead of leather in all (or most) of their shoes. also, vittoria makes some sweet non-leather shoes if you can find them anywhere. i'd go for sidi--not sure where they're made, though.

fixedpip 03-17-05 01:23 PM

From SIDI's website "LORICA is a synthetic material that exudes all the positive characteristics of leather, while having none of leather’s detriments. LORICA is supple, water repellent, breathable and abrasion resistant. LORICA will not stretch, dry out or rot"

Sidis are dope, last a really long time and are very comfortable. Pricey but they last, mine are still going strong after five years of heavy use. Mine are made in Italy so would guess worker conditions are pretty good.

Vittoria and Northwave also make Vegan shoes.

rad... looks like imma be pedalin down to the seattle rei then (probably after checkin the much closer, although much smaller tacoma rei) i guess i have sidi, northwave, vittoria, rampa, and diadora to look out for... thank you muchly guys!

Exactly. Synthetic material in sidis.

I love my sidis. Very comfortable. Worth the money.

habitus 03-17-05 02:03 PM

for those of you that wear sidis, which model do you have?

gonesh9 03-17-05 02:03 PM

Duegi has some nice synthetic shoes from Italy. Nashbar had a super sale on them recently.

Rampa...I don't believe these are manufactured anymore, but I could be wrong.

Sidi Genius 4 is what wear. LOVE those shoes. Got them on sale for $125...just wish I could get a pair of Dominators for that price to use when MTB riding. Maybe next year.

I have Rampa's too. mine are mostly black with a little blue. I had some genius's but they were unwalkaroundable.

crusty_pedals 03-17-05 07:31 PM

vegan shoes? hard to find. even the glues, and all that crap can have animal something or other in them. best route to go is freegan. find some used ones from a friend.

I have Sidi Dynamic 3: http://www.nashbar.com/nashbar_photo...um/SD-NAM3.gif

I used these on my (geared) road bike. I ride with clips and straps on my fixie.

Rev.Chuck 03-17-05 08:29 PM

I have some Genius threes and fours, and a pair of dominators. Best shoes I have ever ridden. One pair is ten years old and still good but don't fit anymore.

wangster 03-17-05 09:45 PM

most clipless shoes now are actually not made with leather anymore. My adidas adistar road shoes are synthetic leather, and are amazing. you're better off getting mountain shoes if you plan on doing any walking at all.
