My girlfriend finds me in the kitchen with tools all over the place putting the last touches on a cheapo ($3 total expediture) singlespeed conversion (it will be a fixie when I have the money for a fixed hub).

"Hey, how's it goin'?"
"Pretty good, I'm almost finished."
"Are you," (looking at deraileurs, levers, and chainring on the ground) "putting this stuff on?"
"No, I'm taking it off, it's just going to have one gear."
"Why?"
"It's nice, you really only need one most the time anyway, you just pedal."
"You mean--like a beach cruiser."
"No, a beach cruiser is a forty pound lumbering tank with a coaster brake. This (motioning at my bike) is going to be a twenty-pound fixed gear rocket. It's liberating, you don't fiddle with gears at all, you just pedal--you'd have to try it."
"But it only has one gear, right?"
"Yeah--one gear."
"I used to have one of those when I was a kid." she says as she starts to walk away--"We called it a beach cruiser."

Gotta love her.

This is how it starts. End it now and save your compact disks!

sounds like my gf. we have an agreement: she supports what i do, but doesn't take an active interest in it. and i do the same with some of the stuff she's into. it's a solid arrangement.

bikeordie 03-17-05 04:24 PM

haha, she seems funny. i like her... what's her number? ;)

emperorbush 03-17-05 04:24 PM

the vanity of women, intentional ignorance as virtue

is this why the greeks had sex with young boys instead ?

robertsdvd 03-17-05 04:27 PM

I like her, keep her.

Serbaside 03-17-05 04:27 PM

This sound like the people who call anything with road drops a "10 speed"

Anthony King 03-17-05 04:30 PM

Understand she doesn't really mean it--she has previously said that fixies are the best looking bikes she's ever seen--she just can't stand to pass up the chance to deliver a cutting remark.

cavit8 03-17-05 04:36 PM

a) she tried to understand
b) she recognized what the derailleurs etc. were (more or less)
c) she didn't flip when she came into the kitchen and found your tools all over the place.

Conclusion: She's a keeper

emperorbush 03-17-05 04:39 PM

and you cant pass up the chance to defend her, whens the marriage ?

not to say theres any such thing as personality anyway

blah blah blah

bostontrevor 03-17-05 05:33 PM

(c) is really where it's at. If you can get past d) She didn't freak out when you put your bike parts in the (please circle all that apply) [ shower, dish washer, sink, laundry, freezer ], then she's the one.

turd 03-17-05 06:09 PM

why would anyone care? unless there's a pool of grease in the bed i could give two turds..
.
come to think of it.. *cough* nevermind.

well, what if she can help you convert/build a fixie and can trackstand longer and skid farther... then what?

labratmatt 03-17-05 07:09 PM

You did throw her the "fixed gear riders make better lovers" line, right?

sounds like my agreement. except the part where you get away without having to show interest.

This is how my girlfriend and I are as well. She lets me ramble about techy bike **** and just spaces out like she's really listening and trying to understand.

Gotta love her.[/QUOTE]

Well of course we have to, otherwise we'd just throw rocks at them and go off and do what we enjoy (like making SS's)
