Mark V tire clearance

Hey all -

I'm looking to pick up a new bike to be my commuter, and since you all seem to say nothing but good words about IRO, I was interested in the Mark V . However, since I'm in the pothole/snow belt, I would like the ability to put on some thicker tires sometimes.

I know I could just wait for the Rob Roys to come out as well. But I'm also impatient :D

What size tires can you sucessfully run on the Mark?

If I remember correctly the Mark V can fit 28mm tires.

there was good clearance for running 28s. Back to 23s at the moment.

Pics of my new rig will be up soon.

I am running Ritchey Speed Max Cross 700 x 30 with a little room to spare.

Huh. All the way up to 30s, eh? Thanks everyone. I'm torn between waiting for the Rob's, or picking up a Mark V.

It can depend on the tire profile. Not all 28mm are equal. I put a pair of 28mm Michelin Axial Sport tires I had hanging around on a MARK V. They sit very high off the rim and there is not enough clearance to mount fenders. They were made in 2001' this model is discontinued. The IRC 30mm tandem tire may fit and is a durable tire for tough conditions. I put some 28mm Rivendell Roly Polies on a Gunnar Street Dog and had to modify some plastic fenders with a heat gun to get enough clearance fwd of the fork. SO IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS USUALLY A WAY.

700X28c's fit, I haven't tried anything bigger.

Tony, I have had problems with these Michelin's 700X28's on other bikes that had 28's on them and when replaced with the Michelin's would not clear the fork at the top. Width was fine. I think it is only a problem with these particular 28's.
The MARK V is all but done and went together without a hitch. Many admirers. This one is a demo that I will ride. However, Like many various bikes I have built as a demo or Jude bike, I often have people make me an offer for the one that is all done. I say, you know its a demo, they say how much, then it's gone. I lost 3 steeds last year that way. It is a pleasure doing business with you and hope to do more.
