EAI Cog...Not impressed
I had to get a 19t cog and chose to go with EAI since alot of people run them. I got the regular deluxe cog. Now I know, "a cog is just a cog", but I have 2 surly cogs and they seem alot beefier than the EAI. Im not saying I put out enough watts to bend and break the teeth but it just seems like the EAI would be burlier. The Surly cogs are a bit thicker, and seem/look stronger. And the Surly has lightening holes. Im NOT bashing EAI, im just surprised. I do want one of their gold cogs at some point though.LOL

Thanks for the review.

I'm sure the gold cog will make you happy.
|
wait until you actually run the cog. eai generally is a lot quieter and smoother than the surly.
|
You kids crack me up. Why would a cog being "beefier" and having "lightening holes" make it better?
I personally don't care to use anything but EAI cogs. |
Have you actually used the cog? Or did you just take it out of the box and inspect it and decide it wasn't up to the job as well as your Surly?
Personally like many others here I fully support EAI cogs. |
Not that I have much to compare it to, but EAI > All-City > whatever the hell came stock on my BD bike.
The EAI cog is like butta. |
Thanks for wasting my time.

I've never owned a Fiero, but I hear they're just as good as a Ferrari.

EAI cogs…..very round.

I love how I make an observation and I get hammered for it. I didnt say I was not going to use it, all I was saying is that I was expecting something a little different. Thats all.

I got an EAI 19T from #Retro-gression , I like it. Nice finish, does the job.
|
I use Surly and Eight inch cogs, never had an issue. Pair that with a kmc $7 chain and my drive trains super quiet. 1/8th chain 3/32 cog. Wouldn't be opposed to using an EAI if I built up a NJS or Bareknuckle. Let us know how you like it when you actually use it though.

You ought to count out Dura Ace cogs then.

Do Ferraris have lightening holes? Fieros look beefier.
An ha. |
I bought an EAI cog and my elephant skids improved by like five feet, so worth the money.

Basically, your mistake was taking a well respected cog, the EAI and compared it to a known lesser cog, the Surly, and made comparisons that actually don't amount to much. The beefier nature of the Surly doesn't really matter because it's the teeth that count and provided you're buying the right sized cog for the right sized chain (ie, not a 3/32 cog for a 1/8 chain), the teeth are going to be the same thickness. The body of the cog can be anything I guess but to me, the 'lightening holes' are only there to hide the fact that Surly have made their cogs out of plate stock that's thicker than it needs to be. I've also spent most of my life playing with lightening stuff and while drilling lots of holes looks impressive, it doesn't achieve much in the real world. Don't be too upset with the children, they get a bit protective of their toys sometimes :50: |
