BostonFixed 03-21-05 09:52 PM

Whatever happened to that guy here on the board that was getting a vanilla custom lugged carbon seatpost to go with the rest of his custom vanilla?
Anyone remember him?
Sounded like a sexxy bike!

EDIT: That is a damn fine sexy seatpost!

pitboss 03-21-05 09:59 PM

my...sweet...lord

that is incredibly gorgeous.

baxtefer 03-21-05 10:12 PM

damn that's sexy.

I'm holding out, however, for the slightly more affordable, but difficult to find miche supertype. silver, not black preferably.....

i, too, am fond of this guy... especially paired with a brown sparrow... in fact, not unlike the setup in the fixer's avatar

Bostonfixed,

I'm the guy waiting (!) for the custom Vanilla. Haven't posted much b/c I'm still waiting for the bike. The agreement I had w/ Sacha was mine was to be "shoved" into the order list and be worked on during weekends and days off for Sacha. As the complexity of the bike grew, so did the time line. Sacha set aside all of January to do my bike and then most of February. Unfortunately, my bike has taken so much work that it really backed up his other orders. It kinda went on hold for a month+ so Sacha could get 3-4 other bikes done that were overdue. Still don't have a completion date. Hoping for April(?). Anyways, Sacha did finish my seatpost early and put it on another bike he showed at the Handmade Bicycle Show. Here's a pic of my seatpost: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/wbaroc...70.jpg&.src=ph

When the bike is done, I'll post pics and/or link to FGG photos.

chimay -

thx for the update on your rig - i was beginning to wonder if you would post some pics anytime soon. i'm the guy waiting until August for my vanilla SS - and it sounds like your build may push that back even farther! nice carbon post, btw... i saw it in person at the show in houston, and it really was pretty sweet. i think for mine though, i'll stick with the one that's pictured above since i'll have no other carbon tidbits on this sled.

the best part of that is that this pic is of my buddy andy's new ride. it's even nicer in person. total bike pr0n.

Alexi 03-22-05 12:24 PM

i have the miche supertype, the only problem with it are that the cut-outs are not that far down on it, they only cover half the unexpossed area on mine, that and they are only 250mm

Yeah, I know what you mean. Like the Campy Record C seatpost (my favorite), these posts are designed for a more traditional frame fit where only 5 inches or so of seatpost is exposed.

daveIT 03-22-05 01:29 PM

That bike would be awesome until I layed it down the first time. I would be scared to ride something so damn beautiful! Does it come with an alarm system...don't let that thing out of your site! I would have to buy a king size bed and sleep with it just so I knew it was safe.

But seriously...that's a sweet looking seatpost...can't wait to see pics of the completed work of art...err bike.

Cheers!

Chimay 03-22-05 01:39 PM

Dave, thanks. Actually the biggest expense of the Vanilla was the addition to my house to hold it. You know, moat around an island; sharks w/ laserbeams on their heads...

Chazz, you like those dropouts, wiat til you see mine!

daveIT 03-22-05 01:43 PM

Were did you find frickin' sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their foreheads? I've been searching ebay for those for a couple years...

auk 03-22-05 01:48 PM

You used sharks? Too hard to find. I just went with the trusted ill-tempered sea bass.

R6G 03-22-05 05:04 PM

Chimay,

Great looking seatpost. I saw the spec of your vanilla fixie, and it looks like Sacha is putting a lot of details on your bike. Did you come up with those ideas?

Chimay 03-22-05 06:06 PM

Short answer: both. Long answer goes into each of the details. When we started I told Sacha I wanted the "ultimate" Vanilla bicycle. Pretty tall order given his level of work. Sacha said he had had some ideas he always wanted to try. The seatpost was an example. He described it to me and I said, "Huh?". Think about trying to describe a seatpost that's never been made before to someone. It took me a week and I called him back. I asked, "Is it gonna be cool?" He said yes, I said go for it. Now you see the result. The lugs were mostly my doing. If you go the "process" link on the Vanilla site, you will see 2 photos of lugs. Those lugs form the basis of my lugs, except that mine will be much longer tipped. The headtube lugs will also have some extra tips. I had the idea of extending the fork dropout tips 3" up the blade, Sacha said to do the same for the rear dropouts. Stem will be all Sacha. The downtube logo, he gave me a choice. Laser cut the script from stainless, polish it and then braze to frame or use a polished stainless downtube and mask off the script before painting. After paint, remove masking to reveal script underneath. I chose the former. I wanted to delete the seat stay bridge (fixed gear=no need for rear brake). He said it had to be there for strength. He came up with the "cool biplane" idea. I still am not sure what this is, but I think it's gonna look like two biplane wings w/ the Vanilla "V" inside a circle like a propeller for a biplane. Don't know, but I'm learning to trust him. (He did a pretty amazing job on that seatpost.) We just finished the seatstay into the seatlug decision an hour ago. The ball is rolling again! There's a laundry list of other stuff on this bike, but this gives you an idea.
