Well.. up until now i road mainly on my mtb and since i sold them and moved to another country...I'm looking for a new bike and seems in my area (NYC) fixie is the best thing i could have right now.

my price range is 300$ (excluding all the small things that usually we get with a new bike.)

after searching the web, looking at people on the streets, there are three choices for me.

1. Pure Fix (325$) - i see a lot of them, also they have all kinds of modifications i can order straight from them.

2. Zycle Fix (300$) - not 100% sure. i sew a thread over here from 2012 that they are not so recommended, maybe things has change? you tell me.

3. 6KU (200$) - very similar to PureFix in my eyes and plus, it saves me a hundred bucks.

btw,if you guys want to suggest me other bikes, FYI, i need 59cm-60cm frame and i would like bullhorn / drop handlebar, rear brake and.. thats it. thats the important stuff.

Do you not want to buy used? I'd think NYC would be a great place to start looking with that budget. Then again are you experienced enough with bikes to evaluate a used one?

well, i thought about searching on CL but i didn't find too much bikes. (that i liked)

and yes, i can evaluate the used bikes condition.

Used opens up a lot more options than just CL, there's pawn shops, bike kitchens/coops, possibly recycling yards etc.. and as I'm sure you know a CL like NYC will see a lot of turnover so your options there should change frequently and of course there's good old fashioned conversions.. if you're up for the wrenching which should open the choices quite a bit more.

FWIW, I tested a Zycle a few days ago. It was a freestyle bike with thicker tubing and BMX bars on it, which I can't find on their site. I actually liked the feel of it in my very short ride, but it was too big for me. All the bikes I see on their website though are made of high-tensile steel and are very heavy. Plus I don't trust a company that has 15 models of bikes, where the only difference is the color.

Pure Fix is not so different also, they have like 2-4 models? in a lot of colors too, am i right?

Yeah, Pure Fix seems to be in the same class as Zycles, at least as far as the "Original" model goes. Someone here did recommend the Pure Fix Premium to me as a nice bike though. In general the advice that I've read here is that you want the frame to be made of Chromoly 4130 (or better), or possibly aluminum. What you definitely want to stay away from are the hi-tensile steel frames that the Zycles and Pure Fix base line are made out of. Frames of that material will be both heavy and not very strong.

You can get bikes in your price range that will still have a frame of decent quality online at someplace like BikesDirect or Nashbar.

so i have decided to buy Zycle fixie or a pure fix.

they are the same price and material, i think they would fit me greatly as my first fixie bike.

if they will be a little heavy its ok by me.

about the weight issue..well i had a mountain bike witch weight about 13kg so i think ill manage it.

You will be happier in the long run. But being in NYC I'm sure you can find something even better on craigslist for $300 within a couple of days

The thing is, i haven't seen a lot of fixies brand names up-close here and i don't know what to buy!
i would like a quality single speed bike because i don't want to go on a ride and get ****ed in the middle of it.

for the record i'm planning to ride between 25-50 miles rides.

i keep getting new links "buy this" or "buy that".

You're going to have to take some time to educate yourself about what's out there. A bike is really a frame + components, generally the frame is the one thing you can't replace on a bike so it makes sense to spend wisely there.. The people in this thread are mostly trying to steer you away from "Hi-Ten" frames because there are better frame options in your budget. "Hi-Ten" is a type of steel used in cheap bikes, Chromoly 4130 is also a type of steel but it's a step up: chromoly frames are lighter and produces a better ride. As far as steel goes, if it doesn't say what type of steel is used, it's probably Hi-Ten. Avoid that and you're already doing OK.

Another thing to keep in mind is some of these bikes only have fixed cogs and some have freewheel and some have both. Since you say single speed I'm not sure if you are looking for fixed gear or just single speed with a freewheel. Of course any of these bikes should be able to add the other if you want but you would need to buy that and the tools to put it on. Not expensive but just more for you to think about. If you are planning to ride fixed, it's a good idea to buy a chain whip tool.
