Tall with a 175mm crank arm problem.
Hi all
First post so hopefully i don't do anything wrong etc etc... Problem I'm 6,4" (height) I have a fixie which currently has : 44T Chainring (CR) 175mm Crank arm (CA) 18T Free/ Fixed cog (currently riding free due to laziness ) The chain, chainring and freewheel cog are gone and need replacing. The current chainset/crankset is orange so i was thinking of replacing the whole thing with something simple (black/silver) and increasing the chainring to 48T. Only problem is in the UK, finding anything longer than 170mm is difficult. I've managed to find this which is 175mm CA on ebay but the chainline is 45mm and shipping it to the UK is kind of....... I was wondering if i get This which is 170mm CA (or any other 170mm CA) and i just raise my seat post a few mm, will it workout the same? (I'm aware that Crank arm length is related to your inside leg measurement and technically i should go for a long CA but with it being so difficult i was hoping for other solutions) Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated thanks. |
You should be fine with 170mm and raising your saddle. Fwiw, I'm a big guy too and 170mm cranks make my legs feel cramped spinning tiny circles. I did it for a long time but not anymore.

What do you run? and how tall are you? I may encounter the same problem with the "tiny circles" . If only i could test out 170mm without paying :( |
I'm 6'5" and I have 175mm road bike crank with a single chainring. If 170 is what you can get then you should be fine. I might just be overly sensitive/picky after years of riding. You might not notice a difference.

Ah, thanks for your help. i guess i will just go with the 170mm then figure out my next step if all fails

I'm only a midget - 6 foot nuffin. I've run 170s and 165s and can't say I noticed a difference.
Applying that to your situation, if 170 is all you can get, you should be fine ... and think of the added ground clearance (pedal strikes are annoying). |

I will probably just go for the 170mm, yesterdays search online didn't come up with any results for a 175mm either. |

. Many brands, looks, styles and prices are available in 175mm. Click the item and a dropdown window appears that allows you to select the size. |
This place appears to be 175mm chainset heaven for you.
Chainsets - Single products from SJS Cycles Or here http://www.velosolo.co.uk/shopcrank.html Here too http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/product...9&wsh=0&page=1 |
Dam most cost more then my bike did lol, but i guess thats how things work.
On a slightly off topic note, can you change a cartridge BB for an external BB? If you can i think my options would be better. |
