chain tension on single speed

1 Attachment(s)
hi,

i have a single speed and there is nothing i can do to adjust the tension of the chain.(modern carbon road frame vertical drop outs) i have had a look at the chain and i can see its going to snap. so i need a new chain as i dont want to be stranded

so i was thinking can i just put one of those tensioners on where the spindle goes through the back wheel or do i need a frame mounted one?

do i need it to push the chain up or down?

and lastly i have no idea what chain i have

any answershttp://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=399106

Great work. Very insightful

Since you have a converted bike with a road crank, any old chain will do. KMC, SRAM work for me. You might get lucky and it fit fine, maybe you need a half link. Tensioners work fine, too. Everything easily available online most anywhere.

I just went through this... I converted a mtb frame to ss and used a Forte tensioner kit. The flex from it being a spring tensioner kept throwing my chain alignment off when under load so I took the tensioner apart removed the spring and reinstalled it. Works great for the cost of 25ish bucks. Since it sounds like you are rigged up except for the tensioner all I can advise is to get a springless tensioner (DMR makes a good one I think), use a rigid mount of some sort. Up, down, I dont think it matters but I think up looks best.

tensioner or eccentric bottom bracket.

would i need to mount the tensioner on the frame (carbon) or could i put on the wheel spindle?

and i take it no spring in the tensioner

thanks

We all can certainly see the it.

Once again, where is the derailleur hanger?

Okay, this is what you should have back there (this pic is a Giant OCR C3 frame)

The derailleur hanger is the bit below the dropout with the hole in it. You'll need that to be able to mount a chain tensioner.

Flatulentfox 08-14-14 03:01 PM

unless it is a chainstay mount like the OP linked to.

it looks like i dont have that, so i am guessing i need something that mounts on the frame itselfhttp://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=399431

Training.Wheels 08-15-14 11:47 AM

Get one that attaches on to the chainstay.

IAmSam 08-15-14 02:37 PM

OP...the butcher job that someone did to the drop-out on your bike is a shame. Thank goodness you don't mind a tensioner, hope you find one you like - you'll need it...
