Ok, am I nuts?

Sitting at lunch we started talking bikes, as we do some times.

Fixed gear came up, and the question also came up, will a track cog fit on a threaded hub intended for a "freewheel"?

And if so, is it possible to build a fixie by brazing the cog to the hub? We are talking about a cheap steel hub.

Let the name calling begin.

(edit) Yes I intend to remove the axles and bearings for the brazing.

Try searching for 'Suicide Hub'

Yes. The threadings are the same; 1.375x24 tpi.

Yes. Red loctite/ JB weld in conjunction with a BB lockring are also used for this bumbike, suicide, or ghetto fix conversion.
I would say that if you are reasonably proficient in welding/brazing, ther would be no problem with the cog coming off.

I have one better, access to the mobile welder who is to be in on Tuesday.

I'll post from my hospital bed if anything goes wrong.

Awesome! Do it!

If you want to braze and/or weld the cog on you need to remove the chrome first. Then make sure the area is spotless.

Although it sounds solid I would use a front brake.

$5 says he's back in a week or two asking about building a true track wheel. The suicide hub is only a gateway. It's where it all begins.

i rode a welded up freehub body for the past year, only just made some proper wheels. it was fine, and cheap. creaked a bit. but yeah, did the job.
go for it.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet....

PICS! We'll need PICS!

Won't there be a problem welding the (most likely) steel cog to the (most likely) alum. hub? Not that I know much about welding, but that's what a big car/welder/mechanic friend of mine told me when we were puzzling over some cheaper conversion options.

Rev.Chuck 04-02-05 01:32 PM

He said it was a steel el cheapo hub.
