cog-chain marriage. will it fit?

I am going to be getting a new front chainring that accepts 1/8" chains. Currently I have a front chainring and rear cog that accept a 3/32" chain.

My question: will I have to get a new rear cog or will it accept the 1/8" chain? It is a Surly cog, 17tooth, neither of which really matters, but folks like specifics around here.

thanks,
ryan

It will work. A 1/8" chain will work with 3/32" components, but 3/32" chain will not work with 1/8" components.
Get it?

EDIT: Your drivetrain may be happier and quieter with all 1/8" components, rather than a mix.

Thanks for the answer! I'll ride it for awhile and if there is noise then I'll get my hands on a 1/8".

The mixing generally isn't too bad - my beater has a 1/8 chain on a 3/32 front ring and the noise is negligible, especially if I keep the chain well lubed.

i ride with a 1/8 cog, 3/32 chainring (soon to be 1/8) and a moped chain. recently its been quite noisy, but yesterday i cleaned and re-oiled everything. yay, less noise.

…but can't some noise be traced back to the chainline?
