New stem for an old bike?
 

Hello everyone. I have been working on converting my '77 varsity to fixed gear. I know it's not cost effective, but I'm doing it for fun and experience. I want to eventually try and go for all black parts, but some of them are posing hard to find. Sheldon brown told me I need a 21.15mm stem, is this correct? If so, where can I find a stem in that size with a 25.4mm clamp diameter in black?

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

if you want to replace the headset, any 1" threaded headset will do as long as the stack height is 36mm or lower, and the crown race id is 26.4. most modern headsets have higher stack heights though, except the chris king gripnut(which is very expensive) and some older headsets, including the shimano hp-6400. but this ones ten bucks.

My vote goes for this; there are plenty more threadless stems and clamp sizes than threaded.

and panaracer makes 27" tires from 1"(25c) to 1-1/4"(32c).


hah, i just realized you said BLACK parts. they do make that 21.1 - 1-1/8" adapter in black, and they do make black 1-1/8" stems, and they make that headset in black, too. does it really have to have all black parts? schwinn varsitys want to be shiny.

i thought you were going for some velo-orange type ish.
