Upgrade my wheelset on the Kilo TT....

Running a deep set of Weinmann's that came from another build. I have $250 or so as a budget. What would you recommend? I have been riding fixed for the past month and plan to stay that way.

No question I'd get the new Wabi wheelset.

Wabi Cycles fixed gear wheels

steve-in-kville 09-20-14 10:37 AM

Great, thanks. Me like!

I can second that suggestion. Wabi wheels are ridiculously light for what they are, and very tough. I have a couple thousand miles on mine and have not had to true them in the three years I've had them.

wtfnoob 09-21-14 03:53 PM

Wabi is coming out with new superlight wheelset in late November... sub 1600g! :O

AristoNYC 09-21-14 08:22 PM

I agree with everyone else, go for the wabi set.

Richard@Wabi informed me.

Exciting! Hopefully they keep the cost down (or keep the old ones around).

As someone who raced a BMX wheelset with Aluminum nips for years with no issues, it baffles me why Wabi uses brass. Why not shave a few more grams for a minimal cost?

The weight savings are miniscule, and I've had problems with aluminum spoke nipples stripping. The one thing I've learned over the years is that aluminum threaded fasteners are definitely not the place to save weight.

I've had good experiences with Velomine on a budget but damn do those Wabis look good. I'd be rocking a set myself if they (old ones) had been in stock when I was on the market.

That said VM Sun M13II to Formula are real cheap and real decent.

franswa 09-23-14 06:38 AM

I also was told by Richard to expect a new, lighter wheelset in November. Now with an option for some silver rims. Wooo!

I was hoping for the opposite move, black hubs and spokes. Still anticipating radness.

Wspsux 09-23-14 08:30 AM

I went with some H Plus son tb14 off velomine for 200 delivered. However theyre heavier than wabi. I'm in it for the 23mm width

Soo__Fuego 09-23-14 09:53 PM

I'm curious to see what he does. The rims he uses are about as light as they get, so he's shaving off weight with lighter hubs or spokes right? I'd be interested, as my DP18 rear wheel feels like it weighs more than the whole bike itself lol.

Bakersb 09-23-14 09:55 PM

I personally would get some secondhand open pro's, then refer to my local bike shop to get them properly tensioned and trued.
I also really like velomine.com, they have some really good deals

ketsana 09-24-14 05:04 AM

Since everyone seems budget conscious here, I'm surprised no one mentioned kinlin builds from bikehubstore.com. That's what I have cause wabi was also out of stock when I was in the market. 1600g with a solid 28/32 spoke count. Cost was around 360$ including 160$ to get them built.

If I build up another bike based on an thick tubed alu aero track frame, I would consider Chinese carbon 38mm or 50mm wheels from yeoleo or something like that for under $500.

Make sure you have them tensioned and trued before riding on them. Those wheels are machine-built and will go out of whack pretty quickly if you don't.

if he comes out with an all-silver wheelset i'd grip.

just hope its the same spoke count for each wheel and the same lacing for each wheel. im not super into the mismatched look

Too many stories of them having issues under regular street use is my guess.
