out with the old, in with the new...

I've had my Langster for about a year now and I want to upgrade the wheels. I'm hoping to fund the wheel build by rolling my change, using my tax return, and selling the old wheels. The wheels are still in decent shape. They're pretty true and round and the threads are all in good shape. What would be a fair price for the wheelset without a tires, cog, lockring, or freewheel? Do you think I could get $75 or more for the set? Have any of you sold your Langster wheels? If so, how much were you able to get for them?

And while we're talking about wheels... I'm thinking of 32 hole Open Pros on Surly low flange hubs with 14/15/14 guage spokes front and back (maybe 15/17/15 for the front) in a 3x pattern. Any other suggestions that would hit within about $50 of this price range? I'm 135 pounds and I don't want deep sectioned rims or high flange hubs. A major reasons for the new wheels is to smooth out the ride a little. I've been doing longer rides on the bike and I hope to do a full century on it this summer. The combo of the aluminum frame and fork and the current high flange/semi-v-sectioned rims is a little stiff for me on long rides.

75 people read this with no opinion on what hubs or rims I should use for a new wheel build or how much a pair of Langster wheel are worth? I just lost a little faith in bikeforums. Let's give it another try and get that faith back... any thoughts?

just put the wheels on ebay. however much they sell for, that's how much there worth.

as for wheel recommendations, there seems to be numerous topics dealing with this already. do a search. your question is fairly vague. if you have a few options that you've narrowed your search down to, they'll be more likely to help.

that's my $.02

It looks like you've answered your own question. For a low-flange non deep-V combo that's about as good as it gets without going out $50 more or less. Other low-flange makers don't come in that price range. The Open Pros are a solid choice.

Surlt Hubs to DT Swiss rims, a sure win combination. I believe the DT Swiss rims run a little less than the Mavics. But the Open Pros are a fine choice too, I have a set of open pros/Ultegras on my geared bike.

for a more forgiving ride, i'd spend the money on a carbon fork & seatpost, & maybe a new saddle, or put 25c tires on it, even carbon handlebars. maybe it's just me, but i weigh 135lbs as well, & i'm all about ultra stiff wheels, for the handling they give, spend the money on carbon extras, you'll lighten the bike & give it a nicer ride, while keeping your handling nice & firm.

Awesome... that's the kind of info I was looking for. I didn't know if maybe I was missing something obvious in the price point. I'll look into the DT Swiss rims a little more.

I'll probably sell the old wheels locally. I know a few people who might be interested in them, but the ebay idea is good. I don't know why I never think of that.

As for the carbon stuff... I've thought about a carbon fork, but I think that's as far as I'd go with carbon, at least on this bike. Carbon posts worry me and I'm not totally convinced carbon bars are worth the money. I have a pair on my mtb and they look awesome and they do take some harshness out of the ride, but I don't know that they're so much better than aluminum to earn their price tag.

Thanks for the info.

i've got a set of DTswiss rims on my road bike, they're great. doubt i'll ever use anything else again.
