Rear wheel
I am looking for a good and fairly cheap rear wheel with a fixed cog. My local shop sucks, pissy employees and pricey gear, so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
Thanks |
Is your shop Back Bay bikes?
Look at an iro rear wheel, $100, irocycle.com Or look local at cambridge bikes, broadway bicycle school, garage de velo.. |

this is one option...i am sure there are a lot of others. I didn't go through the site direct but I am using the same IRO(formula) hub and it is great. And I haven't done bussiness with them yet but tony, the owner i hear is a great man to do bussiness with. good luck. ...oops bostonfixed beat me to it. |
i have recently been going to ata cycles on mass ave in cambridge, maybe i have caught them on off days but i am not impressed.
|
Yea, ata cycles sucks. Try another shop, or one of the ones I listed.

harris cyclery in newton isn't too far. there are some bus lines that run there, or make a friend drive.
cambridge bikes and garage de velo are other viable options, although their stock won't be what harris's will be for ss/fixed stuff. |
IRO's products and service are great. If you don't go that route, I'd suggest avoiding nonetheless the low-end Suzue hubs w/ loose bearings. The IRO/Formula hubs are not all that much more expensive, and are definitely worth it.

thanks for the help, i'm glad i am not the only one not satisfied with ata.
|
i got a rear wheel at garage de velo for 100 bucks i think, tire and tube included... its the suzue basic, but i havent had a problem with it yet, and i've been riding it for about a year now (knock on wood). lately i've had my eye on that IRO they have built up in cambridge cycle though, that thing is sweet!
|
Psst. Here's a hint. Broadway Bike school in camb. (351 broadway, just outside of central/harvard sq's) has an iro hub hand laced to a MA3 for $120. Buy it, before I go and blow my money in there. They're super cool in there....
|
back bay has ****ty service for those of us with shallow pockets, but since i'm on the wentworth cycling team i get 25% off everything other than bikes, so i think i might use that to buy tires and such, i'm sorta in the market since i noticed last night that i wore through the tread on my back tire due to skidding...

does the bike school shop sell just iro hubs too? i've been thinking about building my own wheels for some time now, i built a SS wheel once, its pretty fun, and it passes the time on rainy days
