SS Wheel options?

I'm looking to upgrade the wheels on my single speed bike. I've seen the set from Wabi and like them. I was actually outbid on a used set last night on eBay. They went for $113
I just want to see if anyone knows of other options out there.
I really want machined sidewalls because I never run fixed gear and I run front and rear brakes. I also want sealed cartridge bearings. Since I don't run a cog, I really don't need a flip-flop. If I have to choose between weight and strength I choose strength because I'm 200lbs and I bunnyhop and wheelie over obstacles and for fun. Of course, a good balance of both is ideal. I currently have the deep dish super cool kid wheels that came with my bike. I think they look silly.

Just looking around and searching, it seems that my options are the Wabi wheels or building my own wheels which would get expensive fast. I'm not in a rush so if there is something that is out of production that I can hunt down, I don't mind doing so.
If anyone knows of some wheels that might work for me, I'd really appreciate it.

These are my SSCX wheels. Not the lightest, but inexpensive and bombproof. Weinmann DP18 BLACK 36h Formula Hub track fixed Wheelset MSW [71628] - $119.00 Velomine.com : Worldwide Bicycle Shop, fixed gear track bike wheelsets campagnolo super record vintage bike

So...just get the Wabi wheels. Unless they are out of stock or something.

Those wabi wheels will provably hate you when your 200lb body bunny hops something.

You'd want a FSFG rim like a EERO or chukker if you insist on doing bunnyhops.
Sure the wabis will survive a couple curb jumps but long term durability definitely will not be there. Do try to get the above 2 used though.

Thanks guys. I don't have the funds to buy anything new right now so I figured I'd ask around and see what options might be available. I got a $100 pre paid Amex card for Christmas and almost got those wheels on eBay.

*And just to clarify, I'm not doing anything crazy with bunnyhops, I have my Volume Sledgehammer for oversized BMXing. I just go up and down curbs and I have a habit of wheelieing over train tracks. Oh and the last obstacle I bunnyhopped was a dead cat. Haha

Did you poke it with a stick after?

ajaf1656 01-06-15 03:38 PM

No. I was riding at night with a light that wasn't as bright as I should have been using and didn't see it till the last second. I did hit a live cat once on the bike path. I thought I killed it but when I stopped to see, I saw him scurrying off into the grass.

Mavic CXP 22s are decent. Strong and reasonably light and stay true. Put 28mm tires on them. I have Gatorskin Ultras on mine. Very happy.

Formula hubs, Alex rims. 28spoke 3x, flip-flop hub. $112

Harriscyclery.net sells Sun CR18 rims with Shimano hubs for a bit more.

I have some weinmann wheels (something like this: Weinmann Metal Products Co., LTD) and I weigh 200+ lbs. They are tanks laced to sealed bearing Formula hubs. :thumb:
