Someone should tell this to the stupid USDA, which promotes dairy consumption for bone health....or maybe it's not the USDA that's stupid...

I always thought milk was a little weird, but then I wasn't raised on it. I still reach for soy when I need something in my cereal or coffee.

The USDA is in the pocket of the dairy industry. Think about it. We are one of the leaders of milk consumption. We are also a leader in osteoporosis. In China and Japan they consume very little milk. They have healthy bones.

Ben it's hard to tell who's in who's pocket. Have you seen that documentary Farmageddon? The USDA uses guerrilla tactics to shut down small family farms/businesses if it dangers their interests. I don't really think milk is necessarily "bad" for you. But i think it's a combination of moderation/chemicals/steroids etc etc that is put into mass produced milk, made by cows that are fed tons of antibiotics to keep them "healthy" despite living in "ghetto" conditions. People want things cheap, and alot of it. What would happen if people realized that they don't need as much milk as they think they do, and knowing this, instead were able to buy non hormone/antibiotic free milk? Alot of really rich guys would start losing money. I'm sick of the ****ing American way of needing more more more, for cheap cheap cheap, all the while *****ing about everything. Mother****ers who drive giant, gas guzzling pickups, despite NOT living on a farm or needing such a truck, with a bumper sticker that says "Don't put my flag on your foreign car" while they pull into WalMart to drop a paycheck on cheap Chinese made (with American made oil) stuff. Use yer goddamn brain. (not you, specifically, Ben. Just people in general).. |

If you knew anything about the USDA you would know they are not a reliable source for anything. Their inspection standards are quite poor and their nutrition knowledge is rather outdated as it is coming from industry scientists and people who have a vested interest in keeping people eating animal products. Plus the USDA is the US Dept. of Agriculture not the Dept of Nutrition.
Who do you think the USDA cares about you, a nobody (no offense we are all nobodies) or dat C.R.E.A.M. life son (Cash Rules Everything Around Me). Do you really think they care about you or the lobbyists with money? |
currently drinking a post-ride whey shake, half water half milk
mmmmmmmm my ride was geared however, so does the fact that it was un-hip have an effect on the USDA? |

If you're doing veganism for ethical reasons that's great. But don't think that human nutrition works the same across all populations, it doesn't. |

Ben It's difficult to tease out whether America leads the pack (if we do) in osteoporosis because of our dairy intake or because we're a leader in being inactive sloths. |

I've thoroughly enjoyed this impromptu discussion of regulatory capture and nutrition.

I have no fixed gear bike. I have a single speed BMX that I ride for giggles while I wait for child #1 to grow into it. All my other bikes have gears. From 2x5 to 3x7 with a few stops in between.
I do, however, have it in mind to build a fake fixie with a 2speed kickback hub with coaster brake. I aim for apparent coolness and not walking my bike up the hills (and down the hills) simultaneously. I don't want to be a hipster, I just want their respect without actually earning it. I refrain from commenting on the USDA, Monsanto, Asian lactose intolerance, Leg shaving, GMOs, Vegans, or MTBs. And if the King of Hipsters thinks he can order his subjects around, he fails to understand his subjects and the inherent irony that is part and parcel of that subset of western culture. Better luck herding cats, I think. |

Anyone thinks Monsanto is ok, I guess they're better off. Cause the day is coming that Monsanto starts making Soylent Green, and most of us are going to have to eat it.
