Will I have trouble with a Trek 460 Conversion

Hi Fellas,

I'm planning to pick up a a trek 460, I believe a 1984.

I see the drop out are a bit short but I imagine a half link could fix any issues there.

I dont know much in the way of replacing bottom brackets. I plan on transferring a Sealed cartridge, square taper axle, 68mm over from an older bike. Will I have any problems there?

Ok, that about does it for me. I Probably didn't need to create my own thread for this but, y'no.

I plan on using this bike for lock up purposes. The Garment Center in NYC is no place for my Jamis or Big Block to spend much time. Im trying to do this on the cheap with no new parts.

What is the rear spacing on that bike? You may have to deal with it, either with spacers or frame tweaking.

The bottom bracket spindle length is dictated by your choice of crank.

Have you ever visited your local bike co-op? You will be able to ask questions and do work yourself there.BIKE CO-OP | times-up.org There shouldn't be any trouble converting that old Trek. Good luck

I plan to carry over an entire crank/BB set up from my old Felt Brougham. So I guess I'm in the clear there?
I believe the spacing is 126. The wheel I'll be using is your typical flip flop hub that would come on an entry level fixed gear. I'm not sure if its 120 or 130.
@hairnet
I plan to head up to see my friends at Ciel in NYC. Before I get started on my build they're usually pretty generous with knowledge and help.

Thank you both for the replies!

Sounds likely.

The wheel is likely 120. So a 3mm thick washer from the hardware store on each side and you are dialed in without cold setting the frame.

Only if the axle itself is long enough to add spacers, which is not always the case. The rear wheels on all three of my bd bikes do not have axles long enough to add spacers.

Good thing then that axles are inexpensive.

I just recently converted my Trek 420 and posted a fairly detailed thread here . . . the differences between the 420 and 460 should be minimal. The rear spacing on your 460 should be 126. My 120 rear wheel fit fine, and I just tightened the bolts to compress the rear dropouts by 3 mm each side. Eventually I'll pick up some spacers, but it's not that big of a deal.

As long as the crank from your Felt is 68mm English, then it'll transfer over no problems.

Most of the older treks have square taper bottom brackets
Take the crank bolts off and you should see the square edge of the spindle
Good luck
