For those of you near orange county, ca, King's Bikes in Seal Beach is getting a pretty good track selection. Last time I was in there they had a Colnago Dream, Felt TK2, Pista and Pista concept, a vintage colnago frame as well as a hungarian track bike. Plus a steamroller frame, lots of surly, soma and D-A components. Apparently they're also hooking up with EAI to carry that stuff. Most of the guys I talked to there (3 of the 4) road either a track bike or fixed conversion.

A buddy bought his Cityfixed (about a 600-700 dollar bike) and loves it, if you're not into the the do it yourself thing. In fact he liked it enough to buy his wife a Tricity (sorta the same frame only with a 3 speed internal hub--no fixed gears but then again she hauls their kid back and forth across the Williamsburg bridge in the baby seat).

I've been disappointed by most of the shops in D.C. But the journey to College Park Bicycles is absolutely worth it. Chad is like macguyver with these old bikes.

You should talk to the owner, the name fails me right now. He also ons a shop in Mt. Airy. He probably has at least 20 vintage track bikes in various sizes. Check out bike123.com for details. The owner is a little abrupt if you dont have lots of cash, but if you NEED something, he has it. EVERYTHING! He had 2 ASC hubs the last time I talked to him (4 or 5 years ago)

Yeah, Larry's awesome, but so is everybody else at that place. They must have some kind of magical dickhead filter in the interview process or something.

I'm used to the Mt. airy version, not the CP, I think I figured out what the filter is.

If you're looking for a FG/SS shop further uptown, check out Liberty Bicycles in midtown (846 9th Ave. at 55th Street). They're not exclusively a fixed gear shop like Trackstar, but they usually have ~6-7 different built-up fixies on display - most recently have seen Bianchi Pista, IRO Mark V, IRO Jamie Roy, Moth, Specialized Langster; I think they occasionally have Pake.

Good attitude and reasonable pricing. Absolutely no snobbishness. They will take care of everyone from the delivery guy who needs a new basket to the bike messenger who needs new bullet-proof wheels to a newbie who needs to know how to put a helmet on (I kid you not, somebody was trying a helmet on backwards).

yeah but some of their prices are sky high. plus, at least one of the guys who works there is a complete ass hole.

take the short trip to orange 20 in los angeles for better deals and some good knowledge or even bill ron's shop in redondo.

Bill Ron's shop is like a candy store for me. I found all kinds of great crap I didn't even know I needed.

Plus, an axle to replace my bent one!

They stock Velocity rims, can get Bare Knuckles frames, have a great selection of vintage frames, will build up with quality or economy based on your budget, and warranty everything FOR LIFE. I just got me a sweet ride from there, making heads turn...

oh and they also give haircuts.

In DFW (Irving), I've found Trinity Bicycles to be a nice shop. It's really just 2 guys in a warehouse building.

I had them build me a rear wheel (Deep V with Surly hub) for a decent price.

This shop has hands down the coolest staff of any shop I have seen. I brought a bike in the other day and they replaced a headset for me on the spot, with me standing there watching the whole time. When I worked in the shops there was no way that was happening. I just found them recently and now make it a point to buy everything there. In north OC / south LA county its a place worth checking out.

I love this shop. The owner, Niles, is a nice guy once you get to know him. Just make sure you don't interrupt him or crowd his space. He will get pissed! Every one else who works there is nice too.

+1 I love this shop. I went in there just to see what they had and ended up staying and talking for like 2 hours. They're both very into track racing and the owner runs the beginner's classes at the local velodrome.
