Longleaf Trace

Move over, Silver Comet.............the Longleaf trace has replaced you as my favorite Rails to Trails path.

We pedaled the lower 25 miles out of Hattiesburg to just shy of Bassville, Mississippi today and it is fabulous!
No traffic, few cross streets and lightly traveled on a Tuesday morning.
Facilities are plentiful and the scenery is gorgeous!
Grades are very shallow, and the pavement is pretty smooth and fairly clean.
Only complaint was that it was a misty morning and I couldn't keep my glasses clear until we were almost done.
Not the trail's fault........

I can't wait to do the whole thing!

It is nice to have a 41 mile paved route without having to worry about getting killed while riding. The best parts are between Bassfield and Prentiss if you like feeling you are alone in the world.

Good to know.
I haven't been to that end yet, but will before too long.
Thanks!

No problem, just be aware that the facilities in Prentiss are usually locked, I'm guessing due to vandalism.

The mirrors are smashed at the Hattiesburg men's restroom as well.
I guess college kids haven't changed much.........

I usually start at Jackson Station, especially since they added a new parking lot.

We are in need of a lot more of these here in GA....but given my proximity to the Comet and the drive to Miss, I will keep the local favorite. Glad you were able to get out and enjoy it.

We did another 50 miler yesterday (7/10) at a brisk pace.
We wound up with 16.85 average. Maybe a bit disappointing.
However, when all the slowdowns for cross streets and driveways are taken into account,
I guess we did alright.
I had done a pretty fast 30 mile solo on the rolling terrain around my home, so I wasn't the freshest.
Met a few other riders also.
All in all, a great outing.

I did notice, however, more debris on the Trace in the way of branches and pine cones.
Also quite a number of low branches that are annoying at best, or hazardous at worst.
These hang down over the pavement and are low enough to hit me square in the face!
Hopefully, some manicuring is in the offing...........
