Ocala guy checking in. (Cent. FL)

Hey what's up everyone, just saying hey in the southeast section. I'm in Ocala, FL - I gotta get back in shape so I'd love to keep in the know about rides around here.

I moved away from Astor (30 miles or so east of Ocala) about a year ago.
rode extensively in that area, roads such as SR40, SR19, and CR314 in Marion county,
and Forest road 11 between SR40 and CR314 near Salt Springs.

Many beautiful miles around there. Check with the local bike shops for rides maybe a bit closer to you.
There are a few organized rides such as metric and statute centuries around the horse farm areas near you.

Have fun!!

Thanks. Yes, I'm familiar with Astor. I grew up in South Florida and we used to drive through Astor on the way to visit my grandparents in Ft. McCoy. One time we even stopped and ate at the Astor Mule.

Ocala Bicycle Center has regular rides in the evening. Give Carrie or Dan a call. There is terrific riding north of US 27. CR225 and 225A north to Flemington. If you don't mind the drive, go up to Micanopy and park at the library/court house and ride east to Cross Creek, or ride south to Flemington (or back to Ocala if you can do the distance). Gainesville Cycling Club is worth joining - they have rides for all levels and use the above mentioned routes. Check a map and using the roads mentioned, you can create loops of various distances. We park at a gas station on US27 at Fellowship and head north on 225 and then loop back on 225A. Beautiful horse farms out there - you will enjoy riding. Some hills.

Sadly, the Mule is no more, at least not as the Mule.
Nor is Natale's Pizzaria, home of some of the best pizza I have ever tasted.
Hall's Lodge and restaurant have also changed.
O'Brien's keeps opening and closing as different enterprises.
The Blackwater Inn and Sterlings seem to endure.

But, great riding in the forest down CR445A to Alexander Springs.
Then south to Umatilla, Eustis and Mt. Dora.
Other great roads on the Volusia County side of the river.

Have fun !

Well, not as such.
If it is the one I am thinking of, on HWY40 just inside Astor Park, it is now called the Steel Around Tavern.
It was purchased by a guy from Pittsburgh.

I (still) own a house within spitting distance of it.
