Riding near Gainesville

I'll be at Ginny Springs ( about 10 miles NW of Gainesville) in April.

It's a pretty rural area, which means there are probably lots of roads with minimal traffic. However, those roads might also be home to some people who, to be polite, aren't accustomed to sharing the roads with cyclists.

Any one have experience riding in the area? I'd appreciate any advice, especially specific roads/areas to avoid.

Thanks!

You might want to try the Gainesville - Hawthorne Trail https://www.floridastateparks.org/tr...ille-Hawthorne. Nice ride that goes through Payne's Prairie.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Have you ridden down there much? How are the roads in the area?

My sister lives there so I have some familiarity with the place, but I have not ridden except on the trail mentioned above. My best advice might be to see if you can Google some local riding clubs or LBS to see if they list any routes. You could also go on a site like Mapmyride or Ridewithgps and see if some others have planned some routes in the area.

Contact the guys at Gravel Cyclist.

They are all former road racers turned gravel racers and are based out of Gainsville. They should be able to point you to some good routes, paved or otherwise.

JOM who runs the site posts in the gravel riding forum occasionally.

I did this one a few years ago when I was doing RUSA rides. Decent ride, I did however notice some of the riding spaces were pretty narrow so not a lot of room riding but the cars didn't bother me. It wasn't heavy traffic.

Thanks! I don't need that many miles, but that hits some of the roads I was looking at; especially 340 right by Ginnie Springs.

Thanks everyone.. just got back.

Two rides in the area, both loops leaving from Ginnie Springs (https://www.strava.com/routes/8083797 & https://www.strava.com/routes/8083288 ) . For the most part people were cool. The more heavily trafficked roads had clean shoulders and the roads with out shoulders didn't have much traffic.

The Oleno Trail wasn't that great for road biking.. it was rough compared to the road.

I only had one person yell at me to get off the road (which was helpful since I was in the shoulder at the time :-P) and a semi passed me a little too close even when I was on the shoulder.. but for the most part people were courteous and gave me plenty of space.
