Myrtle Beach
Hi guys,
Gonna be down in Myrtle Beach from Dec. 25th until Jan. 2nd, and am bringing the road bike. Whereabouts are some good areas to ride? I know in the immediate area, there's some pretty busy roads....would like to try to avoid that as much as possible. Thanks, Dana |
From what I remember, there is a group ride that leaves out of Conway on Saturday mornings (about 20 minutes from MB). Call a LBS and they will sort it out for you.
Riding on the beach front can be very dicey, especially with all that sand in your gears :D |
Well...I was more worried about all the damn wind :)
I just need some decent roads to ride on. Gonna probably head over to Columbia as a guy I know from another forum lives there and we'll do a ride, but other than that....I don't really know what else is around. |

It's only like 150 miles away, right?

I lived in Myrtle Beach for a few months and the only places I felt safe riding were along the designated bike lanes long Ocean Blvd from up around 79st North down to 29th North. After that there is nothing but narrow streets and congestion. Some of the new communities, like Carolina Farms are developing some wooded trails but these are few and far between.

Well...fortunatley in the "off season", there isn't many people down there. However, I'll probably just ride early in the morning before most people are out and about and see how it goes. Will bring the trainer too, and "ride" on the balcony overlooking the ocean too :).

GW, drive from MB to Columbia is only about 2.5 hours, depending on which part of Columbia/MB you're headed to/headed from. I'm on the Florence side of Columbia and can be there in that amount of time during the off-season since you won't really have any beach traffic to deal with.
And, you're right, there won't be many cars on the roads down there at all. My wife and I were down last Christmas on Dec. 23 and MOST of the restaurants in the area were even closed for a couple of weeks, with several set to re-open in February. Shoot me a PM and let me know when you'll be in Columbia/which part of town. Love to ride with you and get to know a few others here on BF. |
Cool.....I'll have to see what happens in regards to free time as far as heading over to Columbia. I have a lingering feeling that the girlfriend will put up a stink that I want to spend the better part of a day going for a bike ride. She acted a bit surprised yesterday when she asked if I was taking my bike down there....and I already told her I was doing that a few times already.
I just love when women hear only what they want to hear and block everything else out. |

Now why would you pass up on the nice beaches on the West coast for MB? Clearwater is what, 2.5 hours away? :p |
Place in MB to ride
Hi. I just joined the forum but I've been to MB area every yr since I was about 5. We have a condo @ North Litchfield we go to several times/yr...........main road parallel to the ocean is not bad at all.....secluded, and there are some bike paths nearby. Litchfield about 25 mins south of MB. Know that's too far for ya probly but that's my .02.

Heh....just got back last night. Rode outside twice, and the rest of the time was spent on the trainer, which worked out ok. The roads aren't real bike friendly down there, so I stayed mainly by the water. We stayed at Sandy Beach Resort, which is under some heavy construction (the sounds of hammer drills at 7:30 a.m. is kind of annoying), which is at 3rd Ave South....I headed north up to 82nd Parkway, and beyond that into the residential areas....where I found a nice private beach club, and some mega-expensive houses. Headwind heading north was annoying, but coming back south was nice :D.
Pavement also kinda sucks in parts....felt like I was riding on frost heaves every 20-30 feet. But....damn it was nice riding in bibs and no jacket again. Oh....and it was also the flattest riding I've ever done in my life....21 miles with only 100 feet of climbing; doesn't really get any flatter than that :). |
