Yorktown Va area -- Looking to rent a road bike
Im planning a visit to Yorktown Virginia to see my dad. I was going to bring my road bike but I'm not all that trusting of having it shipped or having it ride under the plane in the cargo area So if anyone knows of a shop in the vicinity or not to far please let me know.
I was thinking about coming around the time of a good century ride. So if anyone has any good information on Organized Centuries out there please let me know.
Thanx
Oh by the way don't let the ID = Nygirl fool you...I'm in Las Vegas now

Hi there
Unfortunately there are no shops in this area that rent road bikes that I am aware of.
However if you do bring your bike on the plane the local bike shops (Contes and Bike Beat) will offer support for if you needed.
As far as organized and sponsered rides, the only two I know of is a 64 mile ride on May 26, 2007. The Surry Century is scheduled for 17 Sept 2007 by the pennisula bicycle association. THere may be more, but I have not heard of them yet.
However there are Saturday and Sunday Shop rides from the local bike shops.
I ride with the Contes shop in Newport News and the Saturday rides are 25 miles and Sunday rides are 50 miles. Bike Beat also has a Saturday ride that is approximately 35 miles.
Depending on when you will be here and how long that will be, it should not nbe hard to get someone from one of those groups to ride a century with you (it just may not be supported however).
I hope this helps.

Depending on where you will be staying at, it should take less than a half hour to get to Newport News.
Map Quest can give you the detail you need as far as directions are concerned.
The Saturday shop rides are a A/B pace (start slow and build up the pace).
The Sunday ride is more of a training pace (A pace)
If you need anything else, please let me know.

Thank you so much for the information. I may just ship my bike to the Contes shop. If you hear of any other rides please let me know. Thanks again Grimmreaper.

If you ship it Contes here is their address:
9913 Warwick Blvd.
Newport News, VA 23601
757.595.1333
When you call you can ask for Walter (He is the owner and also manages).
The Saturday ride is great way to meet the folks here and you will never be dropped.
Depending on the weather the number of riders is usually 15 to 50.

In May, Tour de Chesapeake, just across the bridge and up the road in Mathews.
https://www.bikechesapeake.org/
Very pretty county. All rural. Very flat.
Could do the metric ride, then add the shorter loop to make 100 miles.

I may try to make it to the TdChesepeake, but Bike New York is two weeks before that. Need to decide if I can manage two long weekends out of town so close together. Will decide after BNY.
