I am a lucky man....

So don't be to hard on your self.

Aww, thanks :) I will try to ease up!

I'm single, but still a bit out of shape due to a stupidly long recovery period after a bout with pneumonia last year -- I'm starting to pick it up now, though! (WRT being single -- my hope is to eventually meet a special someone who likes riding as much as I do, but I figure it'll happen when it happens; 'til then, I'm going to ride my legs off :D) I did learn, this past winter, that I love riding in snow and ice, so I'm planning on logging a lot more mileage this year, and I'm feeling better than I have in years, so I'm not expecting any health explosions any time soon (not that one ever does, LOL). I don't mind riding in rain either, though I should probably think about investing in some decent rain gear, since it looks like we're about to get a bunch of cool showers.

I logged 40 miles this weekend and another 17 today. I'm feeling pretty good about that! Today's commutes were both awesome, and after I got home and fed the various animals, I headed out and did an extra 6 miles of hills. There were about a jillion people out in the park (including quite a few on bikes)! I love the weather right now. I hope it lasts!

Marcg 8, yes 25.30 miles, I stopped and talked to to many people.....
March 9, yes, another perfect day to ride, a bit overcast here in Florida today but no sign of rain.
Temp in the high 60s when I left about 11AM. Rode 36 miles. Wind was out of the SSE @ 11 so it was a bit of a drag on the return trip.

No riding today, but I have managed a few rides in the last week, usually my usual 22 or so. Believe it or not, I have actually been getting cold on these 70 degree days! I am wearing two shirts and still not warm. The only thing I can figure is the wind is coming out of the north and has some Yankee left in it! If I ever have to move back up north, I'll freeze to death. Does this make me a Southerner, even if I don't have the official accent?

March 10, yes, another perfect day to ride, no sign of rain and not a cloud in the sky.
Temp in the low 70s when I left about 11AM. Rode 28 miles. Wind was out of the ESE @ 15 so it was a bit of a drag on the return trip. I thought I might take tomorrow off but I looked back at last year and I rode a 30 miler on the 11th so it looks like I will ride after all. I don't want to lose the ground that I have gained.

I managed to get in 22.7 miles today and for the first time this year - I wasn't cold! The wind was really howling today, luckily it was from the South, so I had a headwind on the out leg and a tailwind on the return. The next two days are supposed to be rainy, so I guess I won't ride again until the weekend. I have to take my old Golden/Lab in for more surgery tomorrow. I feel really sorry for her as she just healed up from the last surgery over the weekend and now she has to have more. Let's hope the old girl can pull through one more!

I finally had the time and will .... to go for a ride today. I didn't feel like driving someplace to ride so I took off on the MTB and rode about 8 miles to one of the Cross Florida trail heads. Rode about 2.5 miles on the trail, then rode back home. Cross wind most of the way there and back. For a total of about 18.5 miles... Just checked the weather online.... it says 100% change of rain tomorrow.... LOL

March 13, yes, another perfect day to ride, After 2 days of solid rain.

Went with my friends 16yr old son to the Gainesville Hawthorne trail today (didn't want to ride on the road with all that wind). Rode 20 miles his longest ride to date so far. The ride was a bit slower than when I go by myself, but had fun. We got 9.8 miles out and there is a bench on the trail at that point. He stopped and would NOT go any further, so I had to tease him a bit and tell him "you know your going to have to do 3 laps around the van when we are done or you WONT get 20 miles..." .. The parking lot where we parked in circular and about 1 tenth of a mile lol. We got back to the van and he did 4 laps.... So he got his first 20 mile bike ride... Fun ride all in all....

Got out for a ride on Sunday. Rode for about 3.5 miles in the mud on the MTB and then another mile on the pavement back to the car. Three parts of the trail were blocked by water that I did not want to try and cross (didn't wanna get that wet). I had to ride about a mile back to where I parked on the pavement and that took more energy than riding in the mud and wet soggy grass. I had to ride into what felt like gale-force winds. I think I was going all of 10mph into the wind... LOL Short ride but had fun.

Gavush 03-15-10 06:14 AM

yes, this morning. 1hr ride, 13 miles. Got up at 4:10, out the door at 4:35. on my bike at 5:08, did hill repeats on entrance to natchez trace parkway, back on the road at 6:16, at work at 6:45, showered, and ready to go by 7. It was colder than I would have liked / have the clothes for... 42 I think. Plus, on the last climb it started to rain, so that was nice... Several times I thought to myself "wtf am I doing this for?" But now, clean, warm and ready to go, I feel like a million bucks and I'll probably retract the "I'm not doing this again unless it's over 50" I told my wife immediately after the ride.

No ride today for me.. Never got un-busy enough to go for a ride... DOH!!!

zzOtherlandzz 03-16-10 05:44 PM

Tuesday..... I didn't think that I would get un-busy enough to ride today either.... but.... 4:30 rolled around and I found myself with some free time. So got dropped off about 3 miles from the trail with the mountain bike. Rode the 3 miles to the trail, rode on the trail for a bit over 4 miles. It was a bit more dried out but still pretty squishy and muddy in places, and still could not get past the one spot with the lake size puddle .... lol Rode all the way back to the house for a total ride of about 16 miles.. (15.83miles)... Good ride.. not as much wind .....

Left work a few minutes early planning to go home and take the nearly 3 year old daughter on a ride since Mrs. had the other 3, but when I got MIL's she wasn't there, called her up and found out she was in town and when quizzed, daughter said she wanted to go home with Nana instead of go for a bike ride with Daddy, MIL said that would be fine, but had to drop her off at 6:30 So, I go home and got on my road bike and went out, did what I tought was going to be an 18 mile route but it turned out to only be 15 so I went home and dug out the trailer, set it up, got pedals on mtb, put air in the tires and went and picked lizzie up from the MIL's place (about a mile down the road) but I went there and back "the long way" through a different neighborhood so I didn't have to travel down the heavily traffic'd road that is between their house and ours since it was approaching 6pm. So... got in roughly an hour and 20 minutes of riding / about 19 miles.

March 18, yes, but no motivation...
Temp in the high 50s when I left about 12:00. Rode 24+ miles. Stopped at my LBS and bought a pedal wrench for my daughter and 2 pair of Park chain pilers, skipped Panera Bread for my usual coffee and sweet roll today. After the visit to the LBS I didn't have any money left. Looked like some rain was moving in so I headed for home. No rain.

Rode about 5 miles with the kids around the neighborhood. My son rode his own bike, my daughter on the trailercycle behind me. Nice low 70s weather.

zzOtherlandzz 03-19-10 10:09 PM

Rode almost 8 miles on the mountain bike. Actually rode all 8 miles on the trail this time NO pavement (sept for crossing the road). I keep thinking its going to be dry enough to get past the "lake" in the middle of the one part of the trail. But NOPE the lake was still there smack dab in the middle of the trail. Only today I got to the lake and decided I was gonna go through.... LOL No problem there sept getting 1 foot soaked and the other half soaked. I got about another 1/2 mile down the trail (logging road at this point) only to find that the whole road was under water for about 300 yards... I turned back around.... went back through the lake again (getting the other foot all the way wet now). Got back to where I was parked put on some dry socks & changed the insoles on my bike shoes (had another pair in the van). Went and rode for another 45 minutes or so. Nice ride, had fun.... even with the wet swamp water feet... LOL

Gavush 03-20-10 03:57 PM

Rode into work today, drove to the next town and parked at the bus park and ride place, left the parking lot around 6:20am, took an hour to do the 12 miles... super cold out, actually left my jacket on. (jersey, arm warmers, poly pro shirt, columiba winter jacket, wind breaker, safety bib on top. Legs were cool... windfront tights might have helped. Not sure how cold it was, cold enough to see my breath. Took the mtb, skinny tires, fenders, panniers w/ lunch, clothes, etc. Feels sooo slow, especially uphill. I went two minutes faster on the way home. Some sketchy bits of road (busy road, no shoulder) Not sure it's something I'll start to do regularly. Friday while at the bike shop I saw a guy coming on off the road and chatted with him a bit, he takes the same route pretty much, works about 4 miles away from where I do. Said he had been hit twice, both times in one of the sketchy areas. S

March 20, yes, did a great ride with the daughter today.
We got up at 5 AM this morning and drove to Inverness FL to do The Clean Air Ride. The temp was in the low 40s when we got their about 7:15. Neither of us are prepared to ride in temps that low but we braved the cold anyway ( arm warmers and leg warmers are on the list for next Christmas already). We registered and had the breakfast that they offered and headed south. Slo Spoke Tina wears tennis shoes and has toe clips on her pedals and about 20 miles into the ride one of her shoe strings wrapped around the pedal and she went down. Skinned knee bruised hip and scrapped elbow hurt pride. We patched her up and kept going. We cut the ride a little short at 71 miles. We had a great time in spite of the cold and the blood and broken mirror. The weather warmed up very nice as the day went on and at the finish it was about 77*. We had a great time as the Withlacoochee Trail is one of if not the best trail in FL. Tomorrow will be a short ride (20 miles) to Panera Bread and a car show if the wounds heal enough and the muscles are not to tight.

I had totally forgotten about that phenomenon! It's happened to me at least once as a wee lad.

Drove to the Nature Coast Trail head in Trenton Florida today. Decided I wanted to ride someplace new (for me anyway). Loaded up the road bike, mom & friend and headed west, about an hour and half drive. Got there at about 2pm. Rode the first leg from Trenton to just across the Suwannee river. Doubled back a bit and rode the other leg down to Chiefland. It sure seemed that no matter what way I was headed, It felt like I was headed into a headwind... My mom and my friend went exploring a bit and ended up picking me up at the Fanning Springs trail head. I was pretty much spent at that point anyway so that was a good thing. I think I ended up riding a bit over 31 miles. With the great weather I really expected to see a LOT more people on the trail than I did. For a sat afternoon it was pretty empty, there were a few people out near the towns but only a few bike riders. I had lots of fun but, but kind of a boring trail tooooo much straight and no turns LOL. The bridge over the river was pretty cool though. And the ride from Fanning Springs to Chiefland was nice, tree lined most of the way.

Friday after work rode the MBs on the western part of the Cross Fl Greenway from the 49th Ave Trailhead to SR 484. Only about 8 miles total but nice ride. Saturday was a beautiful day. We knew the Clean Air ride was going on down in Inverness so we decided to load up the bikes and ride the Gainesville/Hawthorne trail. Rode a little over 20 miles. Started on the Gainesville side this time. I guess I am getting used to the hills as even though they were still challenging, I managed to recover quicker. Today, rain here in Ocala so no bike riding.
