Yep... We (me and 2 other friends) started out riding on some non paved trails near Keystone Heights here ---> https://www.srwmd.state.fl.us/index.aspx?nid=245 The trails were ok... nothing special really but good trails. We did almost a 2 mile loop before my friends back started hurting him too much to ride on the bumpy trails. There is a bunch of interconnecting trails that I guess if you rode them all you could get maybe a 8 or 10 mile ride in. His back was hurting so we cut the off rode riding short and went and rode some on the PLB trail see "My friend got killed in a biker bar" thread.... LOL Two of us did about 19 miles.. Other friend did about 12 or so....

Just a few pictures ... NO trail information or anything at the trail head...

One of the local community magazines contacted me yesterday, they plan to do a feature article on the trails here in Seminole county. They conducted an interview with me and will do some photos next week. I guess I am a celebrity now (in my own eyes at least).

We had company Saturday and Sunday but we did get some riding in on Friday. Went down to Hontoon Island near Deland. Took the ferry over to the island. Some of the trails were closed due to prescribed burning but the majority were open. We explored the whole island and all the trails were very easy to ride. Wish I would have gotten a few more pictures of the trails. Some were out in the open while others had shade. Luckily we finished up by about noon before it got really hot. After that, great lunch at Brian's BBQ in Deland. Great salad bar. I didn't take many pics but here's a few:

ferry over to island. Easy to get on with bikes.

a little blurry but....I thought we might be able to go swimming after the ride but once we got there and we saw all the gators....I decided...nope...not here.

there was a marina on the island where you could stay overnight. They also had primitive cabins...real primitive..

a view back to the parking area.

Did have one funny thing happen. We were headed down a trail and hubby was in front of me. I heard him yell and I wasn't sure what had happened. Thought maybe we'd gotten into some bees or horse flies. Went a little further and stopped and asked him. He said something growled at him from the bushes. About that time we got to a dead end and turned around. Looked in the trail and there was a huge racoon. He was walking right in the middle of the trail headed away from us. So, we got on the bikes and started his way cause there was only one way back to the main trail. He would not move but finally after we got closer he took off. Park Ranger later told us that they had been having problems with some of them getting aggressive. Yep, I'd say so.

Overall, nice experience but not something we'd probably do again. Less than 10 miles in trails and that's with going down all the small ones that dead ended.

I was feeling good today. Ended up doing an extra lap around Stone Mountain. My average speed was up too -- about what it was last summer.
The only thing I can figure that helped was what we had for supper last night. We were bored with eating at home so went to The Varsity. I had a slaw dog, m-k steak, and we shared fries and onion rings. Is this some new undiscovered cycling food or do they put "banned substances" in the burgers and dogs?

Lindaosm,

I attended a company function at Hontoon Landing years ago (early 90s) we rented a large pontoon boat and cruised down the river (my buddy and I slept on the boat that night), I think the ferry has been added since that time, Anyway I think I will plan a bike ride up to the marina one day this summer. Do they have a restaurant any place around their. Good photos by the way. Did you see anyother wild life while you were their

well, we didn't see any restaurants in the area. The parking area is in a residential area and we ended up going out to SR 44 and heading into Deland. Great BBQ place (Brian's) with a wonderful salad bar. There might have been something west near the bridge but we didn't go back that way.

Unfortunately no wildlife other than the testy raccoon and the gator that greeted us at the ferry.

The miles out to the ferry parking lot would be a nice ride though. Lots of interesting scenery and the roads didn't seem to be too crowded. But, we were there on a Friday so weekend traffic might be worse.

Have fun and of course take pics if you go.

Today’s ride:
Left the house at 6:30 AM this morning and rode with 2 friends north on the Seminole Wekiva Trail. Stopped at Panera Bread and took a water break and had some breakfast. From Panera I rode north to the horse farms then west to the Sylvan Lake Trail Head. After a short break we headed south and home. When we got back to where my friends had parked their car we discovered that two other cars had been broken into. It’s really a shame that you can’t leave your car at a trail head and not have it broken into.

Today was a repeat performance. Last night we didn't go to The Varsity. Instead we ate at home (there's a novel idea ) and had spelt pasta with mushroom sauce and cut up chicken breast. Maybe the key to good riding is eating a decent meal the night before the ride.
I've got to start getting up earlier and heading out earlier. It was already 82 when I left home this morning and 91 when I got home. HOT !!!!!

Today’s ride:

Left the house at 6:30 AM this morning and rode north on the SWT with my friend Dick. Stopped at Panera Bread and took a water break and had some breakfast. From Panera we rode north to the horse farms then west to the Sylvan Lake Trail Head. After a short break we headed south and home. Dick is a retired lawyer so most of our conversation centered on the Casey Anthony trial that is taking place here in Orlando. He and I have different views on the guilt or innocence of Casey Anthony so it made for a good debate and made the miles go by real fast.Temp was in the high 80s and humidity was 60%.

Yep......... For the short ride to the post office. I had planned on going and doing some loops in the Carl Duval state forest but... TOO MUCH SMOKE in the air. By the time I got to the post office my eyes were bugging me and my throat was feeling kind of well.... yucky for lack of a better word. I did go do one loop on the tail but decided I had enough. It was "okay" until I started breathing hard ... and then It just started making me feel bad. Sooo I ended up just riding home kinda slow.... 7.5 miles or so.... one lap on the trail.... The smoke cleared up for awhile late this afternoon, but blew back in again... Right now it is worse than it was this morning...

Did my usual ride today but on the Specialized. I made a few more adjustments yesterday and I think its almost there. Doing a slight saddle adjustment before my next ride on the Specialized.

Yep... Post office ride and a couple of laps around the trail & ride towards friends house. About 14.5 miles total, 5 miles or so on the trails & dirt road to the trails. Then went west of town (HUGE town of Interlachen that is...lol). So had to ride about 5 miles or so back all in to a pretty strong headwind. Not much smoke in the air at all for the ride today. Got home took a shower and looked outside and the smoke was back worse that it was yesterday.

Left the house at 7:00 AM this morning and rode north on the Seminole Wekiva Trail with my friends Jim, Dick and Rebecca (Jims wife). We took a side trip through Mandarin to get a few rollers then headed to Panera Bread for breakfast. From there we went north through Heathrow then to the horse farms. We turned around about 3 miles north of SR 46 and headed to the Sylvan Lake Trail Head. After a short break we headed south again through Heathrow towards home. Stopped along the way at Panera again and re filled our water bottles. Good ride but it is getting hotter.

Rode today:

Unlike a lot of you I'm not a morning person and exercise too early literally makes me want to vomit. Which is going to be an issue in the summer obviously.

Went out at 2:30 this afternoon for a 48 mile ride along the Miss. River Trail starting at Audubon Zoo and heading out to New Sarpy and back. I managed to maintain an 18 mph average speed in 95 degree heat. I only(!) had three Camelbak water bottles which wasn't quite enough. The last 10 - 15 miles was pretty wretched. I didn't stop for long at the halfway point as the heat was more unbearable when I wasn't moving.

Obviously a lot of other bikers thought better of going out at that time as I only saw a few out on the trail. Maybe I'll have to get used to the morning sickness....

You can see by my posts I hardly ever ride in the morning... And when I do It is usually past 11am ..... and already getting HOT.... DOH!!

Sadly right now I just can't seem to get motivated to do any longer rides... (meaning over 20 miles for me).... Ohhh and the smoke from the wild fires in the area isn't helping with my motivation. helping.

After a week and a half of miserable smoky conditions I finally got free time and clear air lined up yesterday afternoon. Besides, I was pumped by the stage-end drama in the Cirterium de Dauphine. Went out for a not so quick quick 14 miles down Newberry Road to Jonesville, then up 241 and back up 39th Ave. (All Hail Florida, land of the Omnidirectional Headwind). 's too bloomin' HOT in the afternoons. I'm thinking maybe I should talk my boss into letting me work 10-7 once or twice a week so's I can get up and get a long early ride in occasionally.

Today’s ride:

Left the house at 6:30 AM this morning and rode solo on the Seminole Wekiva Trail to Mandarin where I do a loop ride to pick up extra miles. From there it was on to Panera for breakfast. I had my usual bagel and topped off my water bottles for the long ride to the horse farms. I did the scenic ride through Heathrow then Orange Avenue to the horse farms. I turned around about 3 miles north of SR 46 to head back and a deer crossed the road about 50 yards in front of me. After a water break I headed back to the Sylvan Lake Trail Head. After another short break I headed south again through Heathrow towards home. Stopped along the way at Panera again and refilled my camel back and water bottles. My on board computer hit 102 degrees and the actual temp was 95. Good ride but it was getting very hot.

Today’s ride:

Left the house at 6:30 AM this morning and rode with my friend Richard on the Seminole Wekiva Trail. We took the loop through Mandarin to pick up extra miles (about 4 ). From there it was on to Panera for breakfast. I had my usual bagel and iced tea and we topped off our water bottles for the rest of the ride. We did the scenic ride through Heathrow then Orange Avenue to Sylvan Lake road then west to the trail head. We took a short break at the trail head and talked to Cliff another rider that we see often on the trail. After our short break we headed south again through Heathrow towards home. We stopped along the way at Panera again and refilled our water bottles for the last part of the ride. When I came back out on the patio at Panera I bumped into Jackie Crowell who rides for the USA and TT1 women’s pro racing team. She had just returned from competing in the Tulsa Tough race which she won by the way. We talked for a short time about her trip then Dick and I headed home. You can read about Jackie here. She is a great person and a very good cyclist.

I'm getting a really late start this year. Usually by the start of May I'm up to my usual 25-30 mile twice weekly schedule, but this year I've been traveling for work a lot, and just got out for my first ride of the year (a five miler) last Sunday. Today I'm heading out after work to go for about 15 or 20, whatever the legs are up for. First serious hills of the year coming up for me today. On the plus side, the weather here is perfect today, 80s and low humidity.

Yep... Started out as a post office run today. Not too much smoke in the area at 10:30 or so when I left. Went to the post office and decided to keep riding. When I passed the bank around 11am it said 92. Rode west on sr20 out of town a bit. Rode back and then down 315 south... 315 south has a bike lane that was added later and OMG I have rode on dirt roads that were less bumpy. Rode about 6 miles south and it was like washboard bumps almost the whole way.... washboard bumps on the paved bike lane..... DOH!! The 6 miles back was in to a pretty hard headwind. Passed the bank on the way back and it said 98.... 23.28 miles total..... Good ride!!
