Looking for route ideas, DC to Richmond VA

Like it says, Washington DC to Richmond. I will be coming from MD, and probably biking to the Greenbelt Metro and then taking the metro through the city to I guess the end of the yellow line or or blue line, whichever would make the most sense.

Thanks

Route 1 is a designated bike route, but I certainly wouldn't ride it. Check out Virginia DOT. Maybe they have some bike maps. Certainly once you get out of the DC metro area, the options are greater. You might also want to look at the Richmond Area Bicycling Association (www.raba.org). They might have some suggestions.

Why not ride through DC? It's a great place to ride.

Thanks,

This is some really far ahead planning. I will check out the bike maps etc. (I agree about Rt1, it isn't even any fun to drive).

As far as bike vs metro in DC, I am not opposed to Biking through DC. But this trip is kind of 3 parts. Annapolis to DC, Through DC, and then DC to Richmond. It will be a good 150 miles to begin with, so a short break on the metro could be nice. But mostly I picked my route from Annapolis-DC from a route on Bikewashington.org. This route takes you to the metro station, so for now that was the easiest reference point. Once I find the best way south to Richmond I may just plot a route through the city.

And you are correct I do enjoy cycling through DC.

Also search mapmyride.com. I was looking for some other route ideas and noticed at least 2 rides from Fredericksburg to DC or at least one of the southern Blue Line stations.

Remember that Bike Route 1 is not necessarily the same thing as the regular Route 1. I live near Bike Route 1 in Midlothian, south of Richmond, and it's nowhere near the regular Route 1. VA DOT's Bicycling in Virginia map, in fact, suggests that very little of Bike Route 1 and regular Route 1 overlap between Richmond and northern Virginia. Here's the link to order the map:

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has taken Bike Route 1 between Richmond and northern Virginia--I've been thinking about doing the trip, but I've never been north of the James River on it, and I'd be interested to know what things look like through Richmond and beyond. The sections through Chesterfield county, for what it's worth, seem well selected. It's well marked as a bike route, and it does a good job of staying away from heavy traffic.

I live just off Bike Rt. 1 near Ashland, VA (north of Richmond), and I ride on it all the time. It's a very nice ride through there. I've been as far up as Doswell on it. It intersects with Rt. 76 in Ashland.

DC to RVA

Sorry to dig up the past but I am looking into these routes and wanted to know what the outcome was, if any.

Thanks!
