Flagler Trail information needed
 

I am looking for any information about the Flagler Trail that runs the length of Flagler County Florida along A1A and the ocean? Good places to park on the south end, eat, side trips, distance, ect. I have found very little info on the net. Thanks for your input.

Jim, I was recently in Ormond Beach, and looking for places to ride around volusia/flagler counties.. found brief info on the flagler trail, but nothing on the county website. You may want to call the parks and recreation division for more info.

Thanks chrism, I was starting to think that the Flagler Trail was a figment of my mind as no one responded to my post. I will heed your advise and contact parks and rec. Do you have any other suggestions for (road bike) rides in the Flagler county area. Thanks...

Not all of it is open to bikes presently. Only about 12 miles.

Hey serotta, thanks for the reply. I have looked at the info from the site that you suggested. However the Flagler Trail that I am trying to find is on the coast and runs from Marine land north of Palm Coast in the north to the Flagler/Volusia County line in the south. The site that you suggested gives alot of info about Seminole County and I use it often. Flagler County does not do as good of a job advertising any bike trails for some reason. Thanks again for the reply. BTW NC is a beautiful place to ride.

John, I do have longrange plans to do just that. I have a mindset to do the BRP end to end sometime in the near future. I have family in the southern VA area that I visit from time to time so one day I will bring the bike. Again thanks for the reply

Hey, Jim. I grew up right near there, at the northern end of Volusia, on the beach; I'm headed down to see my folks in about a month (early-mid May); I can try to ride up into Flagler and see what's what.

Nearby: if you've never ridden the Ormond Beach Loop, you should. It's one of the last beautiful places in Florida (even though there's a lot more development there now than when I was a kid). http://www.ormondscenicloopandtrail.com/

Hey brianinnc, just took a look at your suggestion... wow I can't believe that it is only 50 miles from my back yard and I didn't even know it. I have put it on my ride schedule for Sunday the 26th. Distance is just right 30+ miles and the scenery must be beautiful. While I am in the area I will try to locate the southern end of the Flagler Trail. Again thanks for the tip.

Park near A1A in Flagler Beach. You can find your way on the A1A bike lane all the way to St. Augustine or south to the north side of the Daytona Beach area. I used to ride it all the time. From Vilano beach just north of St. Augustine there is a bike lane all the way to Jax Beach.. very nice! This is part of the East Coast Greenway.

I used to ride that Ormond loop or a variation of it when I lived in Port Orange, FL. I started off Dunlawton & Nova Road, crossed the Bridge to the Peninsula, rode all the way down to Ponce Inlet on the road closest to the Halifax River, then thru the park. At the ocean, that areas sandy beaches are hard enough to drive cars and ride a road bike on at low tide. From there I rode North all the way to Granada (SR 40), then rode to John Anderson, back North thru the Tomoka/Ormond loop and came back South thru the Mainland side and Beach Street, taking that all the way South to Port Orange again. I'd have to map the miles out, but I made a day of it and took my time.

Now adays, I ride from North Miami Beach to South Beach, FL, it's 15 miles down, so a 30 mile round trip and I've gotten that to 40 minutes each direction. I ride around South Beach with friends, so that works out to 35 miles or so for those rides. My other ride is NMB to Dania Beach pier, that's only 10-12 miles each diraction, but I get to ride thru Hollywood, FL's boardwalk and it's a nice Venice Beach, CA like atmosphere with a park with a paved trail.

The South Beach ride has traffic & road construction and can be dangerous. The Dania Beach ride is more enjoyable. As for the Port Orange to Ponce Inlet to Ormond Loop that was a great ride, but I haven't done that since 1987.

I also lived in Jacksonville for about 4 years, wasn't into cycling then but reflecting back, missed opportunities there, not only Jax/Ponte Vedra to St Augustine, but rides from Jax Beach to Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island. Also could've rode St Augustine to Matanzas Inlet or Marineland, FL ? Just a lot of bikeable routes for a road bike or Touring bike.

I still have the bike that I did the Ormond loop too, it's the 86 Fuji Allegro. Love that bike and it's still immaculate for it's age and mileage.
