What is best route for Trip from Memphis,TN to Chicago,IL
I plan to ride to Chicago Or Urbana,IL in late March. I have found two routes on Google Map. The one is Interstate Highway (I-40W,I-57N) inner state High Way (Maybe IL inner state highway). I do not know that Is there any bike lanes near Interstate or innerstate highway?
Also, I have the following questions
1.Is there very dangerous to ride bike on highway? ( dacoity, extort and etc.) Because of many reasons, I will ride by myself. Is there any violence criminal happen for cycling people in the past time?
2.In china, many people told me that if you drive bike in the highway or state highway china , you maybe attacked by dog. How about US?
3.Is there any other instructions I should know? (i.e:Weather etc)
4.Could you give me some suggestions?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Four days and no one has responded. Do you know why?
No?
Then I'll tell you.
Your ignorance is so profound that no one can imagine where to begin to comment.

I have read on journals that many people ride their bikes on (the near equivalent of interstate) highways in rural China even though they are not supposed to. In most states in the United States, it is against the law to ride a bike on the interstate highways. And whereas rural Chinese authorities may tend to turn a blind eye, that won't happen here -- you will be stopped and told to get off and stay off the interstate. Your inability to construct proper Ameri-speak sentences may help you get leniency in some places; it may hurt you in others. Stay off the interstates in Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois.
You can ride regular state highways and "US-highways". You can also ride back roads -- e.g., county roads, township roads.
A European friend says that travelling by bike in the US is safe - probably the safest country in the world in which to cycle. Referring here to "violence in the night", extortion, that kind of thing. Yes, although we have this world-wide reputation for violence, my socialist friend from western Europe says that the US is the safest country in which to cycle.
Despite what I have written immediately above, if you go into a big city, and don't know what you are doing, expect to be robbed or beaten up. That is a universal rule applicable world-wide. To simplify for you: avoid St. Louis; avoid the St. Louis "suburbs" on the Illinois side of the river; avoid going all the way to Chicago, stop in Urbana.
Will there be dogs? In a word: YES.
Is there anything else you should know? Apparently LOTS.
Chicago is a lot colder in March than Memphis. Chicago is colder than Urbana. There can still be 12 or 18 inch snow storms in Urbana and/or Chicago in March. Even in April. Unlikely, but possible.
I suggest you go to "crazyguyonabike dot com", and do some research. You can find journals of people that have traveled the Great River Route and the Underground Railroad Route from south to north. Both those routes go north.
You could also go to the "Touring" forum here on "BikeForums" and ask questions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, have you considered taking the train?
No?
Then I'll tell you.

Of course. I KNOW what your want to express. However, china is not permit rider to ride in High Way. BUt, it is allow everyone to ride on "The National Road".This is different from "High Way" and National Way.You can find it on Google or Wiki.Thank you.
If you say ignorance, I feel speechless about your comment. When I was only six, we were taught how to ride. If chinese kids over 12,they are permit to ride on bike. Also, I have over 10years more rural biking experience in china? Am I ignorance?
I know there are too many differences between US and china. If I am a new comer of US, Am I a ignorance of every area?
Again, Thank you for your reply.

There are many roads which parallel I-55. Check Google maps for specific info. You will not be able to ride a bicycle on the Interstates, but the other roads should be fine.
p.s. YOU are NOT the ignorant one.....
