Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

New Orleans to Milwaukee - how to get from New Orleans to Aberdeen?

I've got some time in May-June to do a long tour, and one strong possibility is riding part of the Adventure Cycling Underground Railroad route.

I foolishly passed up a chance to go to New Orleans in the 90's, and I'd love to see the city. Amtrak goes there from my area, that's another plus. (I loathe airlines with a passion.)

If I follow this plan, I'd start in New Orleans and join up with the Underground Railroad route in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Google Maps shows it to be a hair under 400 miles, taking me through Bienville National Forest (RV camping, but no tent sites) and Tombigbee National Forest (a few tent sites).

Has anyone ridden any of this? Am I better off heading east and picking up the AC route earlier, say in Coffeeville AL? If there are no campgrounds in Mississippi, perhaps I should start in Alabama to begin with? (Amtrak goes to Tuscaloosa, pretty close to the start of the route.)

I appreciate any advice anyone can give this Jersey boy. Thanks!

Have you considered New Orleans to Natchez, MS (170 mi)? You can take the Natchez Trace Parkway to the Underground Railroad. https://www.nps.gov/natr/camping.htm

That's a good one, thanks! It'll also get me to the Adventure Cycling routes.
